In this study of the economic functions of the Jerusalem temple, Marty Stevens demonstrates that the temple acted as the central bank, internal revenue collector, source of loans, and even debt collector for ancient Israel. Applying a broad knowledge of temple systems throughout the ancient Near East, Stevens sheds light on the roles played by various officials mentioned in Scripture and their tasks within the temple complex. Neither "Big Brother" nor "big business," the temple still served government and commerce in the course of conducting its religious functions.

The temple in Jerusalem was both the center of ancient Israel's religious life and also an economic center for the nation. In this groundbreaking study of the economic functions of the Jerusalem temple, Marty E. Stevens, who worked for fifteen years as a certified public accountant prior to getting a PhD in Old Testament, demonstrates that the temple acted as the central bank, internal revenue collector, source of loans, and even debt collector for ancient Israel. Applying a broad knowledge of temple-systems throughout the ancient Near East, Stevens sheds light on the roles played by various officials mentioned in Scripture and their tasks within the temple complex. Neither "Big Brother" nor "big business," the temple still served government and commerce in the course of conducting its religious functions. This fascinating book opens new avenues for understanding the Jerusalem temple and its impact on Israelite society.

C hristian Churches today have misinterpreted Malachi 3:8-12 to mean that God wants each Christian to give 10 percent of his or her gross pay to the church on His behalf. The promise that God will "open the windows of heaven and pour out so much blessings that they will not have room to receive" has caused poor Christians to give sacrificially as they hope for this windfall. This book is the result of a comprehensive study that reveals that God never asked for money for the tithes. God told Moses exactly what He wanted His people to bring for the tithes, and it was never money. The book reveals why God would never have asked for money, and it could be very liberating to learn that you do not have to pay this 10 percent "church tax."

This booklet sets out to quickly demonstrate the complexity of tithing and why it should not be appropriated in the church. It reaches into the ancient customs and practices, the Mosaic Law, Malachi and The New Testament. I find it alarming, that certain ministry has successfully introduced an unscriptural and summarised version into the church. The teaching of tithing finds no place in the New Covenant. I hear a familiar sound; the pump priming for collection time. Not a collection for the saints, but a collection from the saints. A spiel of the blessings one would receive as a result from paying your ministers to hear the Word of God. This commandment is called tithing. Tithing is leaving many confused and scratching for funds to avoid condemnation. I rarely notice joy at this time but rather the forced grin of obedience. The Pentecostal tithing teaching holds strong ties with the Old Covenant way of life. Materialistic gain being the proof of our favour with God. Does this hold true to New Covenant living? I am surprised that tithing is still accepted by many churches all over the world. It is regarded by many as an infallible biblical truth.

In the book of 1 Chronicles is a story about a King named Solomon. King Solomon burnt 1,000 offerings to God. It was such a big offering that it moved God. He was moved so much he himself came to visit Solomon. Imagine how awesome it would be to have God himself come visit us because we did something to touch his heart. How much more awesome would it be to hear him say to us, ask anything of me. When we give to the Kingdom of God, the windows of heaven will open. For Solomon, God himself came to him, he didn't send a messenger. God loves a cheerful giver and he gave Solomon the opportunity of a lifetime. Don't tithe to be blessed. Tithe because you're already blessed! w w w . t i t h e s a n d o f f e r i n g . c o m Israel carried God's presence in the ark. We carry His presence in our hearts. My name is Rick Mercado, the developer of tithesandoffering.com where we supply "Lessons in Giving for Children and Youth Ministries." Grace is my wife, and Caleb, Elijah, and Joshua are my boys. I joined the children's ministry in early 2002. After only three weeks, my leader asked me to begin collecting the tithes and offerings at the Friday night meetings. I was shocked, because I didn't feel prepared for this important responsibility. I had watched him conduct the offering, asking the kids all sorts of questions leading to their planting of their seed. But let's be honest-I didn't understand what he was doing or why he was doing it. God had something for me-not only for my own personal life, but also for His kingdom. Thus was the beginning of my ministry of "Tithes and Offering."
