One of the earliest guides to breaking horses by one of America's greatest horse tamers. J.S. Rarey was born in Grovesport, Ohio in 1827. His father raised horses, and by the age of twelve Rarey could tame virtually any wild horse. Across the country he gained a reputation as a horse tamer, and in 1856 he published this little book on the subject. In 1857, Rarey went to England, where he made his fame and fortune. He returned to America in 1860, bringing Cruiser, a notorious maniac that he had tamed. At the age of thirty-nine Rarey died, having made his name as one of the greatest horse trainers in American history.

It’s upsetting, but what else can be done? The Wilson sisters decide something could be done. They saw future champions behind the fiery eyes and beneath the shaggy coats. Winner of a 2020 Border Regional Library Association Southwest Book Award “Truly transcendent.” —Jessica Lustig, New York Times Book Review This riveting memoir follows professional horse trainer Ginger Gaffney’s year-long odyssey to train a herd of neglected horses at an alternative prison ranch in New Mexico. Working with her is a small team of ranch “residents,” men and women who are each uniquely broken by addiction and incarceration. Gaffney forms a bond with them as profound as the kinship and trust the residents discover among the troubled horses. Through these unforgettable characters—both animal and human—Half Broke tells a new kind of recovery story and speaks to the life-affirming joy of finding a sense of belonging.
