"Hilarious, insightful and smart. A must-read for anyone who wears clothes.” —Chelsea Handler *US Weekly, “Riveting Reads for Labor Day”* *Bustle, “2015 Books Every Funny Woman Should Read” and “September 2015’s Best Books”* *Refinery29 “Fall’s Most Highly Anticipated Nonfiction Reads”* *theSkimm, “Skimm Reads”* *Popsugar, “Motivational Books You Should Read this Fall”* *AM NY, “New Books for New Yorkers to Read This Fall”* The Lowdown on High Fashion Cosmopolitan.com editor Amy Odell knows what it’s really like to be a young woman working in the fashion industry. In Tales from the Back Row, Amy—funny and fearless—takes readers behind the stage of New York’s hottest fashion shows to meet the world’s most influential models, designers, celebrities, editors, and photographers. But first, she has to push her way through the crowds outside, where we see the lengths people go to be noticed by the lurking paparazzi, and weave her way through the packed venue, from the very back row to the front. And as Amy climbs the ladder (with tips about how you can, too), she introduces an industry powered by larger-than-life characters: she meets the intimidating Anna Wintour and the surprisingly gracious Rachel Zoe, not to mention the hilarious Chelsea Handler, and more. As she describes the allure of Alexander Wang’s ripped tights and Marchesa’s Oscar-worthy dresses, Amy artfully layers in something else: ultimately this book is about how the fashion industry is an exaggerated mirror of human fallibility—reflecting our desperate desire to belong, to make a mark, to be included. For Amy is the first to admit that as much as she is embarrassed by the thrill she gets when she receives an invitation to an exclusive after-party, she can’t help but RSVP “yes.”

Tales from the Back Seat is an inaEUR"depth study by an author who grew up on the island of Grenada, where opportunities were few and far apart, and his transformation to the American way of life once in the United States. It is a wellaEUR"thoughtaEUR"out nonfiction that would make you want to read it repeatedly. It is filled with moments of sadness and joy, as well as periods of disbelief and shame. As an Uber driver, the author gave a frightening colloquy of the risks and challenges of the job, as well as the mistrust and difficulties he faced daily with the city law enforcement, notably the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) and the New York City Police Department (NYPD). The author also took a critical look at the practices of Uber and how it has hurt his business and that of his fellow colleagues. Tales from the Back Seat makes good reading for everyone, but I expect the individuals between the age group of twenty to sixtyaEUR"five years of age to find it very interesting. They are the ones who most frequently use Uber and would be interested in knowing what their fellow riders are doing or saying. This book would change the readers' perception not only of New York City life but that of the drivers as well. Readers would be surprised to know that for many of us, driving is a means to an end. In short, the author took a noaEUR"holdsaEUR"barred approach in writing this manuscript. He hopes that its content would leave you with your mouths wide open, as though you are gasping for air. It is a pageaEUR"turner. However, you should make time to read and digest it. I would advise you not to read it while crossing the streets.

Growing up in Maine, alone in the backseat of my parents' car, I dreamed of replicating my idyllic childhood when I was older with a family of my own. But, a revolving door of Craigslist roommates and Tinder/Bumble dates following my divorce at age 35 resulted in my adult life turning out to be the opposite of what I expected, manifested by the fact that I still find myself alone in the backseat. Faced with the challenge of making my mortgage payments after my husband left, I posted an ad to rent out my living room. Over the past eight years, I have shared my one bedroom apartment with 71 people from sixteen countries, sometimes four at a time! Thanks to my resourcefulness and perseverance, I avoided financial ruin and made friends from all over the world. Although I have experienced the lows of loneliness and divorce, I am grateful for the many times in my life I have felt like the luckiest girl in the world. Cross cultural experiences living with wonderful families in four different countries and exciting international love affairs have often made my life feel like a movie.

Steve Monzelli came of age in the 1970s, an era now considered the Silver Age of Hollywood. He loved movies and was the consummate film buff. He collected movie stills, comic books, 16mm films and posters (including an original one for “Casablanca” worth thousands of dollars). He dressed like the characters he admired in his favorite films, and hung around film sets with the hope of becoming an actor. He also had a great love for good vodka and prostitutes, which caused more than just a few problems. Monzelli met and became friends with many of the cinema icons of the era, including Steve McQueen, Richard Burton, Sam Peckinpah, Bette Davis and many others; and he appeared as an extra in a handful of big-budget Hollywood films, more often than not because he would sneak onto the sets. These tales offer many hilarious and a few sad stories of a life built around one fan’s obsessive love of movies. John Gloske is a former film critic for The Hollywood Times. His previous book was the well-received Tough Kid: The Life and Films of Frankie Darro. He is a long-time small business owner in Los Angeles, California.

In most people’s minds, ambulances are best avoided—we pull over to let them pass, perhaps briefly thanking the universe that the day’s events have not necessitated our own swift passage to the ER, and then we go on with business as usual. But have you ever wondered, as that siren screeches by, what it would be like to work as a paramedic, when the most dire emergency is just another day at the office? In A Paramedic’s Tales, Graeme Taylor reveals all—from the humorous to the horrific. Not knowing what’s around the bend makes for a fast-paced adventure every time a paramedic goes on duty. Taylor, who worked as a paramedic for twenty-one years in Vancouver’s Lower Mainland, the BC Interior and Victoria, shares true stories that are both gritty and uncensored, yet the compassion and courage of co-workers, patients, strangers—and people who had previously threatened to kill our narrator—shine through the gore. The author writes that as a paramedic, to stop from crying you have to keep laughing, and readers will find themselves doing the same. From the near-daily task of deciding whether to send someone to the ER or the drunk tank, to the occasional miracle, to the just plain ridiculous, readers will gain insight into everyday life in emergency medicine. With stories set across the province, from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside to down the side of a cliff, these rollicking tales explain the perils of life before GPS, what to do if a drunk mob surrounds your ambulance, and how to drive like a paramedic.
