In many classification problems, relevant features are unknown a priori. Therefore, many candidate features are introduced to represent the phenomenon. Unfortunately, it is often true that most of these are either partially or completely redundant to the target. Thus, when the size of the dataset is large, an important primary step in the classification task is to remove the unwanted features. In this framework, this study proposes a new subset selection algorithm, called JSS+E (Jackknifed Stepwise Selection with Exhaustive search), in order to improve the stepwise selection procedure. The procedure is applied, in a supervised classification approach, for the differential diagnosis of Raynaud's Phenomenon, on the basis of functional infrared (IR) imaging data. The results discussed for a dataset collected at ITAB laboratory in Chieti, allow to refine the experimental protocol in a completely new non-invasive way.

Infrared thermal imaging is a rapid and non-invasive procedure for mapping skin temperature distribution of the human body. Advanced software and high-resolution infrared detectors has allowed for a renaissance in the use of infrared thermal imaging or thermography in medical research and practice. After a review of theory, technology and methodology of medical infrared imaging, the remainder of the book consists of a collection of clinical case studies demonstrating the wide variety of applications of thermography in modern medicine. The combined expertise from a number of centres is used to create this database of images and cases that will be invaluable for medical researchers and practitioners in making diagnoses and measuring treatment efficacy. This book is recommended reading for practising and training radiographers, medical physicists and clinicians.

Based upon these concepts several areas of study were carried out. All investigations undertaken were confined to cases that ensure radiometric fidelity across image processing operations, since derivation of accurate temperature or emissivity maps necessitate this requirement. Given a low spatial resolution thermal band, these methods produced a high resolution estimate thereof based on enhancement using: (1) a single panchromatic band, (2) a high resolution class-map derived from multi-spectral bands and (3) a statistically based combination of multi-spectral bands.

This paper describes an original method of global machine condition assessment for infrared condition monitoring and diagnostics systems. This method integrates two approaches: the first is processing and analysis of infrared images in the frequency domain by the use of 2D Fourier transform and a set of F-image features, the second uses fusion of classification results obtained independently for F-image features. To find the best condition assessment solution, the two different types of classifiers, k-nearest neighbours and support vector machine, as well as data fusion method based on Dezert–Smarandache theory have been investigated. This method has been verified using infrared images recorded during experiments performed on the laboratory model of rotating machinery. The results obtained during the research confirm that the method could be successfully used for the identification of operational conditions that are difficult to be recognised.

Infrared Thermography (IRT) is commonly as a NDE tool to identify damages and provide remedial action. The fields of application are vast, such as, materials science, life sciences and applied engineering. This book offers a collection of ten chapters with three major sections - relating to application of infrared thermography to study problems in materials science, agriculture, veterinary and sports fields as well as in engineering applications. Both mathematical modeling and experimental aspects of IRT are evenly discussed in this book. It is our sincere hope that the book meets the requirements of researchers in the domain and inspires more researchers to study IRT.

This book presents advances in biomedical imaging analysis and processing techniques using time dependent medical image datasets for computer aided diagnosis. The analysis of time-series images is one of the most widely appearing problems in science, engineering, and business. In recent years this problem has gained importance due to the increasing availability of more sensitive sensors in science and engineering and due to the wide-spread use of computers in corporations which have increased the amount of time-series data collected by many magnitudes. An important feature of this book is the exploration of different approaches to handle and identify time dependent biomedical images. Biomedical imaging analysis and processing techniques deal with the interaction between all forms of radiation and biological molecules, cells or tissues, to visualize small particles and opaque objects, and to achieve the recognition of biomedical patterns. These are topics of great importance to biomedical science, biology, and medicine. Biomedical imaging analysis techniques can be applied in many different areas to solve existing problems. The various requirements arising from the process of resolving practical problems motivate and expedite the development of biomedical imaging analysis. This is a major reason for the fast growth of the discipline.
