Welcome to "If God is My Shepherd, Why Did I Stray From the Flock?", a journey of exploration, understanding, and hope. This book is more than just an inquiry into the reasons behind spiritual wandering; it is an invitation to rediscover the profound love and guidance of God, our Shepherd, even in moments when we find ourselves lost or distant. At some point in our spiritual journey, many of us face a crucial question: If we are under the watchful eye of a loving Shepherd, why do we stray? The world we navigate is complex and filled with distractions that can lead us away from our spiritual path. This book seeks to explore these complexities, offering insights and encouragement for those who may feel they have wandered far from their faith. Through the following chapters, we embark on a journey together. It’s a journey that starts with understanding the metaphor of God as a Shepherd – a portrayal rich in care, protection, and unwavering commitment. This image, deeply ingrained in the Christian tradition, sets the stage for our exploration of faith, wandering, and return. As we navigate through the chapters, we confront the realities of life that can lure us away from our faith. We grapple with the wilderness experiences – times of doubt, isolation, and spiritual dryness – and learn from those who have walked these paths before us. We delve into the process of turning back, the steps towards restoration, and the joy that comes with reuniting with our faith and community. But this book is more than just a narrative of straying and returning; it is a guide for deepening our relationship with God, understanding His unceasing love, and recognizing our role in the broader community of believers. It’s about learning to listen to the Shepherd's voice amidst life’s noise and understanding the profound impact of our journey on our eternal destiny. As we turn these pages, my hope is that you will find not just answers, but also comfort, guidance, and a renewed sense of purpose. Whether you are someone who feels they have strayed from the path, a believer seeking to deepen your faith, or simply curious about the Christian perspective on life’s wanderings, this book is for you. Let us journey together, guided by the wisdom of Scripture, the experiences of believers past and present, and the unchanging truth of God's love for each one of us. May this exploration bring clarity, hope, and a renewed commitment to walk closely with our Shepherd, today and always.

Cognitive linguists and biblical and patristic scholars have recently given more attention to the presence of conceptual blends in early Christian texts, yet there has been so far no comprehensive study of the general role of conceptual blending as a generator of novel meanings in early Christianity as a religious system with its own identity. This monograph points in that direction and is a cognitive linguistic exploration of pastoral metaphors in a wide range of patristic texts, presenting them as variants of THE CHURCH IS A FLOCK network. Such metaphors or blends, rooted in the Bible, were used by Patristic writers to conceptualize a great number of particular notions that were constitutive for the early church, including the responsibilities of the clergy and the laity, morality and penance, church unity, baptism and soteriology. This study shows how these blends became indispensable building blocks of a new religious system and explains the role of conceptual blending in this process. The book is addressed to biblical and patristic scholars interested in a new, unifying perspective for various strands of early Christian thought and to cognitive linguists interested in the role of conceptual integration in religious language. A biblical, historical, theological, and practical foundation for pastoral leadership Pastors have been entrusted with leading the people of God. The shepherds of God’s flock must protect them from and guide them through the many dangers believers face. Although ultimately the Church is led by Christ, pastors are to provide godly examples of what it means to be a follower of the Lord. Consequently, who leads the church, the type of authority they are given, how they relate to one another, to whom they are accountable, and how they are selected are of utmost importance to the life and health of God’s people. This book provides the biblical, historical, theological, and practical foundation of the crucial task of leading God’s people.

First Published in 1967. This is volume one of three of The History of Four- footed Beasts taken principally from the ‘ Historite Animalium’ of Conrad Gesner. During the first decade of the seventeenth century, when Topsell prepared his translation, zoology had just become a science. It has a unique place: It was the first major book on animals printed in Great Britain in English; and it appeared at the last moment in history when all zoological knowledge since antiquity could be summarized sympathetically, before it was rendered a curiosity by the many new discoveries soon to come.
