The first aircraft approach and landing data are presented for normal fleet operations with qualified carrier air groups flying the models F8U-1, F3H-2N, F9F-8P, A3D-2, and A4D-1 aircraft. The data were derived from film records photographed aboard the USS SARATOGA during Mediterranean Sea maneuvers in June 1958. The aircraft landing and approach parameters were obtained from film records through a technique developed by the Aeronautical Structures Laboratory (ASL), use of the ship's logs, AN/SPN-12 doppler radar and point readings of the Mark 19 gyro compass indicator dial for carrier deck pitch and roll angle. The parameters included in this report are approach speed, wind velocity over the deck, engaging speed, sinking speed, wing lift factor, aircraft pitch and roll angle, aircraft wheel and hook height above the carrier ramp, landing weight, aircraft centerline off-center distance, distance from ramp to first main wheel touchdown, glide path angle, arrestment wire engaged, and the carrier deck pitch and roll angles. The University of Dayton is supporting Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) research on the structural integrity requirements for the US commercial transport aircraft fleet. The primary objective of this research is to support the FAA Airborne Data Monitoring Systems Research Program by developing new and improved methods and criteria for processing and presenting large commercial transport aircraft flight and ground loads usage data. The scope of activities performed involved (I) defining the service related factors which affect the operational life of commercial aircraft; (2) designing an efficient software system to reduce, store, and process large quantities of optical quick access recorder data; and (3) providing processed data in formats that will enable the FAA to reassess existing certification criteria. Equally important, these new data will also enable the FAA, the aircraft manufacturers, and the airlines to better understand and control those factors which influence the structural integrity of commercial transport aircraft. Presented herein are analyses and statistical summaries of data collected from 3987 flights representing 7120 flight hours of six typical MD-82/83 aircraft during operational usage recorded by a single airline. The data include statistical information on accelerations, speeds, altitudes, flight duration and distance, gross weights, speed brake/spoiler cycles, thrust reverser usage, and gust velocities encountered.

A statistical analysis of aircraft approach and landing contact data for normal fleet operations in WESTPAC for the model A-1H aircraft during January and Febraury 1964. The parameters are presented in the form of histograms and probability curves. Statistical values for each parameter are listed in the summary table. (Author).

A study has been conducted to determine the effect of several variations of two types of visual display systems on subjective pilot evaluations and objective measures of performance in the landing approach. Two types of flight approaches were made with either a projector or quasicollimated monitor visual display: (I) the instrument approach, and (2) the visual approach without the normal cockpit instrumentation assistance. The variables examined were color; differences between displays due to quasicollimation of the monitor display; and reduced resolution as related to brightness, contrast, and sharpness. The use of color had two main effects on pilot performance in the landing approach. The touchdown distance and standard deviations increased more for the monitor displays, and the touchdown rates of descent were slightly lower. With quasicollimation, the standard deviations of touchdown distance increased, and the rate-of-descent standard deviations decreased in a direction more favorable with the actual flight data; an association between the standard deviations of rate of descent and touchdown distance suggests that a corresponding decrease in the deviation of rate of descent will be offset with an increase in the deviations of touchdown distance. The time outside the glide-slope error limits was less with the monitor display than with the projector display, and the lateral localizer error was smaller for the projector display because the pilots intercepted the runway center line at a greater distance from the threshold. With reduced resolution, there was a slight change in the touchdown distance and the standard deviation; for the flights made without color, the landings were predominantly to the right of the runway center line with twice the standard deviation. The pilots were more critical of the black and white variation for either display, and favored more use of a color system. Advantages cited for a color system included greater pilot relaxation, decreased fatigue, better picture quality, and more realistic depth perception, particularly with the monitor display. With regard to the reduced-resolution monitor display, the pilots also noted a loss in depth perception and height references, increased visual fatigue, and increased efforts for a reasonable approach in comparison with the projector display. The objective performance measures of the study were reasonably consistent with the pilots' subjective evaluations and comments.

The Federal Aviation Administration William J. Hughes Technical Center is conducting a series of video landing parameter surveys at high-capacity commercial airports to acquire a better understanding of typical contact conditions for a wide variety of aircraft and airports as they relate to current aircraft design criteria and practices. The initial parameter landing survey was conducted at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in June 1994. Four video cameras were temporarily installed along the north apron of runway 13L. Video images of 614 transport (242 wide-body, 264 narrow-body, and 108 commuter aircraft) were captured, analyzed, and the results presented herein. Landing parameters presented include sink rate; approach speed; touchdown pitch, roll, and yaw angles and rates; off-center distance; and the distance from the runway to the threshold. Wind and weather conditions were also recorded and landing weights were available for most landings. Since this program is only concerned with the overall statistical usage information, all data were processed and are presented without regard to the airline or the flight number. Subsequent surveys have been conducted at Washington National runway 36 and at Honolulu International runway 8L, and these results will be reported in future technical reports.
