Spatial domain representation for face recognition characterizes extracted spatial facial features for face recognition. This chapter provides a complete understanding of well-known and some recently explored spatial domain representations for face recognition. Over last two decades, scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT), histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) and local binary patterns (LBP) have emerged as promising spatial feature extraction techniques for face recognition. SIFT and HOG are effective techniques for face recognition dealing with different scales, rotation, and illumination. LBP is texture based analysis effective for extracting texture information of face. Other relevant spatial domain representations are spatial pyramid learning (SPLE), linear phase quantization (LPQ), variants of LBP such as improved local binary pattern (ILBP), compound local binary pattern (CLBP), local ternary pattern (LTP), three-patch local binary patterns (TPLBP), four-patch local binary patterns (FPLBP). These representations are improved versions of SIFT and LBP and have improved results for face recognition. A detailed analysis of these methods, basic results for face recognition and possible applications are presented in this chapter.

Face recognition has received substantial attention from researchers in biometrics, computer vision, pattern recognition, and cognitive psychology communities because of the increased attention being devoted to security, man-machine communication, content-based image retrieval, and image/video coding. We have proposed two automated recognition paradigms to advance face recognition technology. Three major tasks involved in face recognition systems are: (i) face detection, (ii) face modeling, and (iii) face matching. We have developed a face detection algorithm for color images in the presence of various lighting conditions as well as complex backgrounds. Our detection method first corrects the color bias by a lighting compensation technique that automatically estimates the parameters of reference white for color correction. We overcame the difficulty of detecting the low-luma and high-luma skin tones by applying a nonlinear transformation to the Y CbCr color space. Our method generates face candidates based on the spatial arrangement of detected skin patches. We constructed eye, mouth, and face boundary maps to verify each face candidate. Experimental results demonstrate successful detection of faces with different sizes, color, position, scale, orientation, 3D pose, and expression in several photo collections. 3D human face models augment the appearance-based face recognition approaches to assist face recognition under the illumination and head pose variations. For the two proposed recognition paradigms, we have designed two methods for modeling human faces based on (i) a generic 3D face model and an individual's facial measurements of shape and texture captured in the frontal view, and (ii) alignment of a semantic face graph, derived from a generic 3D face model, onto a frontal face image.

Abstract: "We describe a computational model of face recognition, which generalizes from single views of faces by taking advantage of prior experience with other faces, seen under a wider range of viewing conditions. The model represents face images by vectors of activities of graded overlapping receptive fields (RFs). It relies on high spatial frequency information to estimate the viewing conditions, which are then used to normalize (via a transformation specific for faces), and identify, the low spatial frequency representation of the input. The class-specific transformation approach allows the model to replicate a series of psychophysical findings on face recognition, and constitutes an advance over current face recognition methods, which are incapable of generalization from a single example."
