A prototype of a neutron-gamma ray flight instrument for consti uent analysis of remote bodies in space (e.g., the surface of the moon) was developed and assembled to permit optimization studies and fi ld tests. The prototype was not intended to fully meet the problems of space environment and a particular mission. The first performance test in the laboratory indicated the device will work satisfactorily. The exploration of the subnuclear world is carried out through increasingly complex experiments covering a wide range of energies and in a large variety of environments — from particle accelerators and underground detectors to satellites and space laboratories. For these research programs to succeed, novel techniques, new materials and new instrumentation need to be used in detectors, often on a large scale. This book reviews the advances made in all technological aspects of the experiments at various stages. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in:• Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings® (ISTP® / ISI Proceedings)• Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)• CC Proceedings — Engineering & Physical Sciences

This is the first book to present the science and instruments of NASA’S MESSENGER space mission. The articles, written by the experts in each area of the MESSENGER mission, describe the mission, spacecraft, scientific objectives, and payload. The book is of interest to all potential users of the data returned by the mission, to those studying the nature of Mercury, and by all those interested in the design and implementation of planetary exploration missions.
