Since it was first published in 1984, Graham Duke's abc Air Traffic Control has passed through eight editions and numerous reprints, making it one of the most successful Ian Allan books of all time. It is easy to see why, as it explains in simple, layman's terms the often complex, and controversial, topic of air traffic control. This new, and fully revised ninth edition again gives the reader a comprehensive account of contemporary air traffic control practice. Fully illustrated with both photographs and line drawings, abc Air Traffic Control remains an essential guide for all those interested in the operation of modern civil aviation. Since the eighth edition was published in 2001, the partial and controversial privatisation of National Air Traffic Services Ltd (NATS) has taken place, bringing the subject of air safety and how it can be incorporated into an area of commercial imperative into the commercial arena. One of the most significant changes to have occurred in the four years since the publication of the last edition is the commissioning of the major new ATC centre at Swanwick, a project that had been much delayed.Another significant change has been the demise of Concorde operations at the end of 2003, and the cessation of the special air traffic control regulations that controlled the world's only supersonic airliner. At a time when the level of air traffic flying through UK air space continues to grow apace and when the incidents of recorded 'near misses' are also on the increase, the subject of air traffic control remains important. The fully revised abc Air Traffic Control (ninth edition) is certain to be amongst the most successful civil aviation titles of 2005.

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,8, University of Flensburg, course: English Worldwide, language: English, abstract: In this modern day and age it has become very important being able to travel from one country to another in a very short time by airplane. Transporting all kinds of cargo across the world without great time loss has become a essential part of our everyday life. Or how would you feel if you weren’t able to buy your bananas and mangos in the supermarket in your hometown anymore? Millions of people travel every day and thousands of containers have to be flown, to guarantee the full supply of all consumers in the world. The extreme increase of air traffic over the years has made it necessary to introduce rules for air traffic controlling, develop new technology and establish standards that are valid for everyone. A major part of air traffic control is the communication (ATCC) and the technology involved in it. It is necessary in the entire world to regulate all sorts of communication between ground controllers and the pilots of aircraft. But why was this communication invented? How is it used? And are there special forms of air traffic control communication? All these questions and an overview of the technological inventions, that are used nowadays in air traffic control, will be given in the following chapters.

This is a reincarnation of the Air Band Radio Handbook, an essential reference book first published over 20 years ago and a stronger seller throughout its eight editions. The new title reflects not just the extent of overhaul and updating that has occurred for this new version, but also the fact that a larger proportion of the audience these days comprises air traffic controllers themselves (both trainees and fully qualified) as well as the traditional air band listening enthusiast. The expert author's accessible and comprehensive text explains the intricacies of air traffic control and its jargon, enabling the reader to locate and interpret what is actually going on in the airways overhead.

This volume is a compendium of papers presented during the International Workshop on Air Traffic Management, which took place in Capri, Italy, on September 26-30, 1999. The workshop was organized by Italian National Research Council in co-operation with the University of Rome "Tor Vergata", and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This was the fifth in a series of meetings held periodically over a ten-year span for the purpose of encouraging an exchange of views and fmdings by scientists in the field of Air Traffic Management (A TM). The papers presented at the workshop dealt with a wide range of topics and covered different aspects that are currently important in Air Traffic Control and Air Traffic Management. This volume contains only a subset of the papers presented, namely the ones that addressed the main area emphasis in the workshop, new concepts and methods. The subject of the first two papers is Collaborative Decision Making (CDM), a concept which embodies, to a large extent, the new philosophy of partial decentralization and increased delegation of responsibilities to users in A TM operations. In the first of these papers Wambsganss describes the original CDM project and its initial implementation in the form of the Ground Delay Program Enhancements. He also provides a brief description of some of the tools that have been developed as part of the CDM effort and identifies future research and development requirements.
