This account of therapeutic yoga analyzes local adaptations in the sociocultural context of North America in order to explore the relationship between body, self, and therapeutic persuasion in an emerging practice. Based on data from ethnographic fieldwork at yoga therapy centers and professional conferences and trainings, as well as through interviews with forty students and teachers/therapists, I trace how yoga is currently used as a self-technology. Specifically, I argue that yoga therapy helps to materialize psychological selfhood and expressive individualism by teaching students to attend to their bodily sensations in a mode that resonates with already held notions of self, rooted in Euro-American history. At the same time, the practice provides immediate bodily and affective experience that counters habitual sensory-affective states, providing relief and pleasure. Case studies illustrate differences in the way the practice is internalized by students with distinct life histories. I explore the cultivation of "somatic hope," a psychocultural phenomenon that combines relief from psychodevelopmental narrativizing, the felt effects of body practice, and the expectation that "body" shapes "mind." Findings challenge contemporary theories of somatic selfhood and somatization in the anthropological and psychological literature, emphasizing that work on the musculoskeletal body is highly persuasive because it taps into sensations of everyday embodiment. The psychocultural work of yoga therapy offers a domain for the cultivation of a non-genital erotics, and the expansion and transformation of psychological selfhood, as well as the potential relief of past and present distress as students learn to feel these as bodily felt processes.
