Every year, 40,000 Americans suffer spinal cord injuries. Lee Goldstein is one of them. Lee has been living with his injury for 66+ years, making him unofficially the longest living quadriplegic in history. The story of his injury and the reasons for his survival are chronicled in this stunning book. Lee tells of his terrible injury, his fight for life, and the amazing life he has led ever since. He was rescued from drowning by a famous singer. He hob-nobbed with celebrities during his hospitalization, and afterwards. Behind his success, as a young man and an adult, was a loving, caring and supportive family. Lee Goldstein and his late wife Marilyn raised five adopted children, including Tim, who suffers from autism, and whom they raised to successful adulthood. Lee’s present wife Ellen is a rock and has made Lee’s later years close to divine. No punches are pulled in this very honest and sometimes graphic account of what para/quads and their caretakers must be prepared to deal with every day, from the use of wheelchairs, to bathroom needs, to the sometimes life-threatening, embarrassing, or hilarious moments in the para/quad’s life. Everyone who reads this book will be inspired and will come to better understand the real lives of para/quads, how they must live in order to keep living, and knowing that a good attitude has much to do with how good life, even in a chair, can be.

Abuse is insidious. Like a silent serpent, it slithers into your soul, spreading its venom. Be it substance, sexual, physical or emotional, abuse wraps you in a constricting embrace, crushing the hope, the joy - and sometimes the life - from all it touches. It traps you in a prison from which few escape. For most who live through it, the poison left in their soul most often spreads out, affecting all who touch them; turning the abused into the abuser. 1968 - A year of violence, war, unrest and fear. King and Kennedy are assassinated. There are riots in all across America. Thousands of young American men are killed, maimed and wounded in Viet Nam. Thousands more live in fear of the Draft. Amid this turbulent time, in Simi Valley, on the outskirts of Los Angeles, a group young people are bonded together by mutual backgrounds of abuse, tragedy and violence. Together, they must learn to break the coils that surround them and forge new futures - or be condemned to a cycle of destruction.

This novel was written years ago. It was found "Like a treasure in a grandma's attic" and reviewed by close literary friends who advised publication. It is an absorbing story of a day when the United States was embattled among Communism, Fascism, Peace, War, Strikes, Depression, hopeful and hopeless love. It was a time when many in the population were immigrants and their children, strangers. Television had not erupted; radio was dominant. Every city had several newspapers usually for less than a nickel. Gangster Dillingers were thought to be Robin Hoods, (which they were not) and often achieved their nebulous glory before they were thirty. It was a time of Billie Holiday, Paul Robeson, The Scottsboro Boys, America First, Father Coughlin, Franklin Roosevelt, Hemingway, and Steinbeck. The urbanite relaxed by going to a crowded beach along a waterfront. Young love sometimes had a dollar to splurge on a date. Young love made do and was often oblivious to the whirling crises of the times. Much of this is in The Way They Were written fifty-odd years ago. An enthralling view.
