Excerpt from Sixteen Years in Siberia George Kennan's valuable work, Siberia and flu Exile System, the fruit of investigations carried on under circum stances of much difficulty and even danger, has made its many English and American readers acquainted with the true conditions of life among Russian political prisoners and exiles. The story given in the present volume of the painful and tragic events that took place in the political prisons at Kara after Mr. Kennan had left the Russian Empire was written to him by, among others, a friend resident in Kara at the time, whose letter he published in his book. In it are also to be found additional particulars concerning the earlier or later history of many persons whose names occur in the following pages; and it thus throws an interesting light on Mr. Deutsch's story, which is told so quietly, with such an absence of sensationalism, that it is sometimes necessary to read between the lines in order to grasp fully the terrible realities of the situation. It may, perhaps, be useful to readers unfamiliar with the history of the Russian revolutionary movement if I give here a rough sketch of its development, and of its position at the present time. "Those among us who survived," says Melanija, "did so because we were unbelievably full of the determination and will to live, and faith in our ultimate liberation, as well as because all the disasters arose unexpectedly." From her own and some of her fellow victims' notes and diaries written while the experiences were raw, she portrays an authentic panorama of what ethnic cleansing looked like on the ground during her involuntary Siberian exile (1941-1956). First on an animal collecting station near Tyukhtet when her son Alnis is only nine, and later in the village itself, she and the other women endure homelessness, borderline starvation, extreme cold, humiliation, insult, ill treatment and brutality, and all the while without any knowledge about their husbands' fate, the men having been separated from the women and children already at the first train station where their ordeal began. Add to that, black mud into which one sinks up to the knees, and in Melanija's case, a death's door operation. Miraculously, some survived, and a few, like Alnis, even ultimately regained a respected position in society. Indomitable, iron lady Melanija recorded uncounted biographies of those who did not—members of her extended family, neighbours, friends and acquaintances. She filled one hundred and ten large albums in her calligraphic handwriting, supplemented by photographs, and hand drawn maps and pictures. In Latvia, this documentary became an instant modern classic. In September 2014 it was published in Russian.

Excerpt from Sixteen Years in Siberia Since the first publication in English of the following memoir it has also appeared in French, German, Italian, Dutch, Polish, and Bulgarian, while the original Russian has been printed in Switzerland. In July, 1904, the notorious political trial at Konigsberg took place, in which certain German subjects were prosecuted for smuggling Russian revolutionary literature over the Russian frontier. In this trial, will be remembered, after sensational revelations had been made as to the falsifying of documents by highly-placed Russian officials in order to manufacture evidence for the prosecution, the accused were either acquitted or given light sentences for technical infringements of German law. An interpellation concerning the case was made in the Reichstag by Herr Haase, and in his reply Count von Bülow, the Imperial Chancellor, cited the case of Leo Deutsch's extradition in 1884, in order to prove that Prussia's political action in such matters is at the present time in every way consistent with that pursued by Prince Bismarck in the last century. Excerpt from With the Die-Hards in Siberia Originally written for the private use of my sons in case I did not return, this narrative of events. Connected with the expedition to Siberia must of necessity lack many of the necessary ele ments which go to make a history. I wrote of things as they occurred, and recorded the reasons and motives which prompted the participants. Many things have happened since which seem to show that we were not always right in our esti mate of the forces at work around us. Things are not always what they seem, and this is probably more evident in the domain of Russian affairs than in any other. It would be comparatively easy to alter the text, and square it with the results, but that would destroy the main value of the story. The Statesman and the Soldier rarely write his tory. It is their misfortune to make it. It is quite easy to be a prophet when you know the result. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Siberia and the Exile System, Vol. 1 Siberia and the exile system published in The Century Magazine have been based apparently upon the assumption that a survey of any one particular department of national life must necessarily be incomplete and misleading, and that the fair-minded investigator should supplement it by taking into the field of vision a quantity of unrelated facts and phenomena from a dozen other departments. Excerpt from Through Siberia It has been comparatively easy, therefore, in England for writers to exaggerate on this subject almost as they pleased, because scarcely any one could contradict them. Comparatively few travellers cross Northern Asia to the Amur. I doubt if any author has pre ceded me. Probably also I was the first foreigner ever allowed to go through the Siberian prisons and mines. Perhaps none before have asked permission. That I obtained such an authorization astonished my friends, though the open manner in which the letter was granted seemed to show that the authorities had nothing to hide. A master-key was put into my hand that opened every door. I went where I would, and almost when I would; and on no single occasion was admission refused, though often applied for at a moment's notice. Statistics also were freely given me; but this was not so writ in the bond. An after thought, in Siberia, emboldened me to ask for them in various places, and they were usually furnished then and there. All these are displayed before the reader. I have exaggerated nothing, -kept nothing back. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
