Download Six Years in the Canadian North-West (Classic Reprint) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from Six Years in the Canadian North-West This Book, which I dedicate to the Canadian Public, is not a work of fiction, but is purely historical. In writing it, elegance of style has not been studied, but rather a simple relation of facts as they occur. It may be wanting in interest to the lover of imaginary adventure, but to those who love the truth, I trust it will be found sufficiently interesting to repay a perusal. My object in undertaking this work is not to gain notoriety, but to furnish the Canadian Public with an account, not yet given by any writer, of the object of the organization of the North-West Mounted Police Force, the trials, privations, and adventures which they encountered, and the results of the expedition. Download The Mounted Police and Prairie Society, 1873-1919 Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This collection of essays presents a variety of scholarly explorations of the nature and role of the Mounties in the Prairie Provinces from the formation of the North West Mounted Police in 1873-74 to its transformation into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1919-20. The essays are grouped into five broad themes: relations with First Nations; law enforcement; social issues, including relations with minority groups and labour movements; characteristics of the police force; and crisis and change (police-immigrant relations, response to labour unrest, and the origins of domestic intelligence and counter-subversion). An epilogue presents the case for the dramatic change of the force after 1919-20 and the new force's use of the positive image created by the old force.

Download Adventurers of the Far North, Vol. 6 Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from Adventurers of the Far North, Vol. 6: Pioneers of the North and West The map of Canada offers to the eye and to the imagination a vast country more than three thousand miles in width. Its eastern face presents a broken outline to the wild surges of the Atlantic. Its western coast commands from majestic heights the broad bosom of the Pacific. Along its southern boundary is a fertile country of lake and plain and woodland, loud already with the murmur of a rising industry, and in summer waving with the golden wealth of the harvest. Download The Homesteaders Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from The Homesteaders: A Novel of the Canadian West IX little slates clattered into place, and six little figures stood erect between their benches. Right! Turn! Said the master. March! School is dismissed; and six pairs Of bare little legs twinkled along the aisle, across the well worn threshold, down the big stone step, and into the dusty road, warm with the rays of the Indian summer sun. The master watched them from the Open window until they vanished behind a ridge of beech trees that cut his vision from the con cession. While they remained within sight a smile played upon the features Of his strong, sun-burned face, but as the last little calico dress was swallowed by the wood the smile died down, and for a moment he stood, a grave and thoughtful statue framed within the white pine casings Of the sash. His sober grey eyes stared unseeing into the forest, while the light wind that stirred the golden maple leaves toyed gently with his unruly locks.
