The production of single Z bosons has been studied at Fermilab's Tevatron by the CDF and D0 collaborations. Measurements include the weak mixing angle, vector and axial-vector couplings between Z bosons and light quarks, and angular coefficients in electronic decays which are sensitive to the spin of the gluon. The collaborations have looked for and indication of new physics above the mass scale that can be directly produced at the Tevatron by studying the interference between Z and photon propagators. All measurements are consistent with Standard Model expectations.

This dissertation describes a search for Z/[gamma]* boson pair production decaying into [mu][mu][mu][mu], [mu][mu]ee, and eeee final states with approximately 1 fb-1 of data at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at √s = 1.96 TeV. The small cross section times branching ratio for each channel mandated a thorough study of the acceptance and efficiencies. After optimization, 1.7 ± 0.1 events are expected for Standard Model production with a background of 0.13 ± 0.03 events. One event was found in the [mu][mu]ee channel. A cross section limit of 4.4 pb is determined at a 95% confidence level for Standard Model production. Additionally, one parameter and two parameter 95% C.L. limits are found for the anomalous neutral trilinear gauge couplings ZZZ* and ZZ[gamma]*. The one parameter 95% C.L. coupling limits with a form factor scale of 1.2 TeV are: -0.28

This work develops novel data analysis techniques enabling aspects of the Standard Model of particle physics to be tested with unprecedented precision using data from the DZero experiment at the high energy “Tevatron” proton-antiproton collider at Fermilab, Chicago. Vesterinen's measurements of the transverse momentum of Z bosons using the novel variable φ* have exposed deficiencies in the current state-of-the-art theoretical predictions for vector boson production at hadron colliders. These techniques are now being used in the experiments at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and have stimulated considerable interest in the theoretical particle physics community. Furthermore, Vesterinen's measurements of the cross sections for the production of pairs of vector bosons (WZ and ZZ) are to date the most precise ever made.

Higher order QCD corrections to W and Z boson production do not only manifest themselves in the generation of high transverse momenta of the weak bosons, but these QCD effects become directly visible in the production of jets in association with the weak bosons. Studying these processes is not only interesting from the perspective of testing perturbative QCD, but also to constrain a major background to many Standard Model (SM) of non-SM physics signals, e.g. top pair and single top production, searchers for the Higgs boson, leptoquarks and supersymmetric particles. This thesis describes a measurement of Z/[gamma]* + jets production in p$\bar{p}$ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV in the decay channel Z/[gamma]* → [mu]+[mu]-. An integrated luminosity of L≈ 1fb-1 collected by the D0 detector at the Tevatron between August 2002 and February 2006 has been used. Differential production cross sections as function of the transverse energy of the first, second and third leading jet are measured. The distributions are corrected for acceptance and migration effects back to hadron level using an iterative unfolding method. Comparison of the measured cross sections to event generators, which include part of the higher order corrections are presented.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland, is the world's largest and highest energy and highest intensity particle accelerator. This book provides an overview on the techniques that will be crucial for finding new physics at the LHC, as well as perspectives on the importance and implications of the discoveries. Among the contributors to this book are leaders and visionaries in the field of particle physics beyond the Standard Model, including two Nobel Laureates (Steven Weinberg and Frank Wilczek), and presumably some future Nobel Laureates, plus top younger theorists and experimenters.

Recent measurements of processes involving the electroweak bosons, Z and W, performed at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider are summarized. The large integrated luminosities collected by both the D0 and CDF Collaborations enable precise measurements of differential single boson production cross sections, the determination of the W mass with unprecedented precision, and the observation of diboson production including ZZ.

This thesis describes searches for new particles predicted by the super symmetry (SUSY) theory, a theory extending beyond the current Standard Model of particle physics, using the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The thesis focuses on searches for stop and sbottom squarks, the SUSY partners of the top and bottom quarks, which are expected to be lighter than the partners of the first and second generation quarks and therefore good candidates for the first evidence of SUSY. It describes novel techniques for estimating and rejecting the Standard-Model backgrounds to searches for these particles. It also includes an independent analysis seeking to constrain the Standard Model ttZ background process, which also represents the first ATLAS search for this rare process at the LHC. The stop squark analysis described, with substantial leading contributions from the author, is the first search for these particles at the LHC to use the jets plus missing transverse energy plus 0-lepton signature and provides the world's best limits on the stop mass for light neutralino LSPs. All in all, the thesis describes three different world-leading analyses in both Standard Model and SUSY physics and therefore represents a major contribution to the field.
