Dr. Marshall Wingfield was widely regarded as the foremost authority on the history and genealogy of Franklin County, Virginia. Although his manuscript on the pioneer families of Franklin County--with references to nearly 15,000 persons--was completed in 1939, it remained unpublished until 1964, when the Virginia Book Company of Berryville, Virginia, issued it with the consent of Dr. Wingfield's widow. Now that the original edition of the Wingfield work is out of print, Clearfield Company has arranged to reprint it by special courtesy of the Virginia Book Company. If your Franklin County ancestor is among the following families, here is one book you cannot afford to do without: Akers, Bernard, Boone, Booth, Bowman, Brodie, Brown, Cahill, Callaway, Carper, Claiborne, Cooper, Craghead, Davis, Dillard, Dillon, Dudley, Early, Ferguson, Finney, Fishburn, Glass, Goode, Greer, Hancock, (Thomas) Hancock, Harper, Hill, Hook, Hopkins, (Charles) Hopkins, James, Jamison, Laprade, Lavinder, Lee, McNiel, Marshall, Martin, Mitchell, Montgomery, Motley-Martin, Naff (Naeff, Knaff), Nelson, Peters, Pinkard, Powell-Payne, Price, Prillaman, Prunty, Ross, Saunders, Swanson-Muse, Taliaferro, Tate, Tinsley, Turner, Walker, Webster, and Wingfield.

This book chronicles thirty generations and a thousand years of Sanders (and Saunders) family evolution beginning before Englands earliest days and ending across the Atlantic in colonial Virginia and later Kentucky. Family figures are described in their own distinctive historical contexts, and an extensive genealogy focused on Old World lineage is appended. Nearly a thousand chapter notes on sources and commentaries are furnished to assist readers interested in discovering their own ancestry. This new book revises and expands our earlier edition by extending family history another five generations and two hundred years into the deep past, correcting earlier literature on this subject. For the first time, the family coat of arms is decoded to learn its message. The portrayal of family activity and circumstances before and during the American colonial period are improved, and an appendix of previously unpublished Sanders vital records for the seventeenth century is included.

This is the definitive work on Americans taken prisoner during the Revolutionary War. The bulk of the book is devoted to personal accounts, many of them moving, of the conditions endured by U.S. prisoners at the hands of the British, as preserved in journals or diaries kept by physicians, ships' captains, and the prisoners themselves. Of greater genealogical interest is the alphabetical list of 8,000 men who were imprisoned on the British vessel The Old Jersey, which the author copied from the papers of the British War Department and incorporated in the appendix to the work. Also included is a Muster Roll of Captain Abraham Shepherd's Company of Virginia Riflemen and a section on soldiers of the Pennsylvania Flying Camp who perished in prison, 1776-1777.
