In addition, this book serves as a bridge between the popular and professional literature on treatment of sexual abuse survivors. By using fairy tales and mainstream literature - including Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, The Velveteen Rabbit, and current pop works such as Stephen King's It - the authors show how numerous metaphors for abuse are presented in our everyday life.

The fable of the Emperor's New Clothes is a classic example of a conspiracy of silence, a situation where everyone refuses to acknowledge an obvious truth. But the denial of social realities--whether incest, alcoholism, corruption, or even genocide-is no fairy tale. In The Elephant in the Room, Eviatar Zerubavel sheds new light on the social and political underpinnings of silence and denial-the keeping of "open secrets." The author shows that conspiracies of silence exist at every level of society, ranging from small groups to large corporations, from personal friendships to politics. Zerubavel shows how such conspiracies evolve, illuminating the social pressures that cause people to deny what is right before their eyes. We see how each conspirator's denial is symbiotically complemented by the others', and we learn that silence is usually more intense when there are more people conspiring-and especially when there are significant power differences among them. He concludes by showing that the longer we ignore "elephants," the larger they loom in our minds, as each avoidance triggers an even greater spiral of denial. Drawing on examples from newspapers and comedy shows to novels, children's stories, and film, the book travels back and forth across different levels of social life, and from everyday moments to large-scale historical events. At its core, The Elephant in the Room helps us understand why we ignore truths that are known to all of us.

First published in 1996. The Homosexual(ity) of Law is an innovative and important investigation of the legal representation of identity and sexuality. This wide-ranging and theoretical study demands that we think again about the legal regulation of sexual relations. It examines how both sense and nonsense of same-sex relations are made in law by way of ‘homosexual’. It explores how the introduction of an idea of homosexuality both promotes the continued abhorrence and increased punishment of same-sex relations and makes possible reforms in the law that promote respect for these relations. This study investigates the struggles that surround the review of the law on ‘homosexuality’ undertaken by the Wolfenden Committee in the 1950s and explores the peculiarities of the enactment of the term ‘homosexual’ into the law of England in 1967. It challenges the current understanding that ‘homosexual’ is either a term used to name a specific category of act or a term that is merely used to name an identity. The Homosexual(ity) of Law shows how ‘homosexual’ is a term that signifies both of these things, but it is also capable of expressing many other meanings. It explores the values that are given a voice through this new term in law. It also demonstrates that ‘homosexual’ in law is a reference to a complex technology of interrogation, surveillance and documentation that isolates gestures, speech and deportment and gives them meaning as ‘homosexual’ in law. Through an analysis of various police practices, the day-to-day decisions of the judiciary in high profile test cases and recent Parliamentary debates relating to the age of consent law reform, The Homosexual(ity) of Law explores the way this ‘homosexual(ity)’ is put to use in current legal practice.

Michael Servetus participated in the Protestant Reformation and translated the Hebrew Bible into Latin. In July 1531, he published his De Trinitatis Erroribus (On the Errors of the Trinity) in which he explained clearly that the Trinity was a 3-headed monster. Accordingly, Catholics and Protestants alike condemned him. He was then arrested in Geneva and burnt at the stake as a heretic by order of the city's Protestant governing council. This book was translated into English only in 1932, but still worse, the main arguments from part V were completely distorted. For example he explained that God's name was Iehouah because in Hebrew this name was close to the name of Iesuah (Jesus), or Iehosuah, which means "Iehouah is salvation". He also knew that according to Paulus de Heredia, a Christian Cabbalist, the meaning of God's name was "He causes to be" (yehauueh), but he never confused the pronunciation of God's name with its Kabbalistic meaning (yehaweh). For Servetus, Iehouah was the only true God.

The understanding of God's name YHWH is so controversial that it is eventually the controversy of controversies, or the ultimate controversy. Indeed, why most of competent Hebrew scholars propagate patently false explanations about God's name? Why do the Jews refuse to read God's name as it is written and read Adonay "my Lord" (a plural of majesty) instead of it? Why God's name is usually punctuated e, â (shewa, qamats) by the Masoretes what makes its reading impossible, because the 4 consonants of the name YHWH must have at least 3 vowels (long or short) to be read, like the words 'aDoNâY and 'eLoHîM "God" (a plural of majesty), which have 4 consonants and 3 vowels? At last, why the obvious reading "Yehowah", according to theophoric names, which all begin by Yehô-, without exception, is so despised, and why the simple biblical meaning, "He will be" from Exodus 3:14, is rejected.
