Excerpt from Contract and General Trade List of "California's Choicest Flower Seeds Since 1890" Crop 1933 All our seeds are grown under the personal supervision of our staff of trained horticulturists, combining the latest in scientific methods with the vast fund of practical knowledge which has developed during the course of our three genera tions of flower seed growing. We value the Medals and Awards of Merit won by our Flowers at horticultural exhibits, but place a higher value on the universal preference being manifested throughout the world by seedsmen who know and appreciate superior types and strains. Our method of selecting and hand-picking enables us to maintain our reputation as Growers of the best. In our forty-two years of Flower Seed Growing we have made an intensive study, not only of types and colors, but also of the climatic and soil conditions in which each class of Flower Seed may be produced to the best advantage. A well balanced mixture cannot be grown as such in the field, since certain colors mature earlier than others. We, therefore, produce all of the important mixtures, such as Asters, Zinnias, Larkspurs, Sweet Peas, Verbenas and Cosmos, in separate colors, and make up the mixtures, using the correct proportions of each color to make a well blended, brilliant mixture when reproduced the first season from seed. These mixtures we generally offer as Finest Mixed, while our Good Mixed is grown in the field as mixed. For this reason we list in some instances both Finest and Good Mixed. First published thirty years ago, the long-awaited second edition of Growing California Native Plants is the ideal hands-on native plant guide for both experienced and novice gardeners. In addition to the voluminous knowledge contributed by Marjorie G. Schmidt, now deceased, Katherine L. Greenberg has taken note of the vibrant state of today’s horticultural scene, adding plants and ideas that were little known when the book first appeared. Lavishly illustrated with 200 new color photographs, drawings, maps, and charts, this concise and easy-to-use reference covers trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, bulbs, grasses, and vines, and includes a plant selection guide for quick reference. The authors, whose combined experience spans six decades, take California’s summer-dry climate and restricted water supplies into account and provide helpful notes on companion plants and gardening with wildlife. Practical and informative, Growing California Native Plants is a valuable reference for gardeners everywhere in California and an enjoyable book simply to explore.
