This thesis describes the search for the rare decay K →?+?{bar {nu}} in the pion momentum region 140 MeV/c ≤ P{sub {pi}+} ≤ 195 MeV/c. This is a Flavor Changing Neutral Current (FCNC) decay which is forbidden to the first order in the Standard Model (SM) by the GIM mechanism. However, this decay mode is allowed in the second order by two Z-Penguin and one box diagram and is expected to have a branching ratio of (0.72 ± 0.21) x 10−1°. This decay mode is sensitive to the coupling of top to down quark and therefore a measurement of the branching ratio for this decay mode provides a measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element V{sub td}. The recent observation of two events in the pion momentum region 211 MeV/c ≤ P{sup {pi}+} ≤ 229 MeV/c estimates a branching ratio of 1.57{sub -0.82}{sup +1.75} x 10−1° for the same decay mode. We have extended the search for this decay to the lower pion momentum region. Data collected by the Experiment E787 at Brookhaven National Laboratory during the 1996 and 1997 run were analyzed in this thesis.

This book reports on a new result from the KL→π0νν search at the J-PARC KOTO experiment, which sets an upper limit of 3×10-9 for the branching fraction of the decay at the 90% confidence level, improving the previous best limit by an order of magnitude. To explain the matter–antimatter asymmetry in the universe, still unknown new physics beyond the standard model (SM) that breaks CP symmetry is necessary. The rare decay of a long-lived neutral K meson, KL→π0νν, is a CP-violating decay. It is an excellent probe to search for new physics because new physics can contribute to the decay and change its branching fraction, while the SM is as small as 3×10-11. However, it is extremely difficult to search for because all of the decay products are neutral and two neutrinos are undetectable. The KL→π0νν signal is identified by measuring two photons from a π0 with a calorimeter and confirming the absence of any other detectable particles with hermetic veto counters. The book contributes to the analysis of neutron-induced backgrounds which were the dominant background sources in the search. For the background caused by two consecutive hadronic showers in the calorimeter due to a neutron, the author evaluated the background yield using a data-driven approach. For another background caused by an η meson production—η decays two photons—by a neutron that hits a veto counter near the calorimeter, the author developed an original analysis technique to reduce it. The book also contributes to the analysis of the normalization modes (KL→3π0, KL→2π0, KL→2γ) to measure KL yield, the estimation of the signal acceptance based on a simulation, and the evaluation of the trigger efficiency. As a result, significant improvements in the measurement were achieved, and this is an important step in the continuing higher sensitivity search, which can reach new physics with the energy scales up to O(100-1000 TeV).

We give a status report on inclusive rare B decays, highlighting recent developments and open problems. We focus on the decay modes B[yields] X[sub s, d][gamma], B[yields] X[sub s][ell][sup+][ell][sup -] and B[yields] X[sub s][nu][bar[nu]]and on their role in the search for new physics. Most of the inclusive rare B decays are important modes of flavour physics due to the small hadronic uncertainties. They can be regarded as laboratories to search for new physics. We collect the experimental data already available from CLEO and the B factories BABAR and BELLE. We review the NLL and NNLL QCD calculations of the inclusive decay rates that were recently completed, and discuss future prospects, especially the issue of the charm mass scheme ambiguity. Finally, we analyze the phenomenological impact of these decay modes, in particular on the CKM phenomenology and on the indirect search for supersymmetry. We also briefly discuss direct CP violation in inclusive rare B decays, as well as the rare kaon decays K[sup+][yields][pi][sup+][nu][bar[nu]] and K[sub L][yields][pi][sup 0][nu][bar[nu]], which offer complementary theoretically clean information.
