The aim of SDI (Strategic Defense Initiative) is to secure and deploy a thoroughly reliable defense against Soviet strategic and intermediate-range missiles. SDI is a research program and the research will last for some years. The program is within the ABM Treaty limitations, despite Soviet violations of that treaty. Is is too early to speculate on the kinds of defensive systems that might prove feasible and desirable to develop and deploy. The purpose of the defense options is clear: to find a means to destroy attacking ballistic missiles before they can reach any of their potential targets. The SDI program is designed to enhance allied security as well as U.S. security. One of the early options of the SDI, i.e., a defense against tactical ballistic missiles, is of vital importance for Western European security. SDI represents no change in the commitment to deferring war and enhancing stability.

Download European Security in a Global Context Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This new edited volume examines contemporary European security from three different standpoints. It explores security dynamics, first, within Europe; second, the interaction patterns between Europe and other parts of the world (the United States, Africa, the Middle East, China and India); and, finally, the external perceptions of European security. The first part of the book analyses the European security landscape. The roles of EU, NATO and the OSCE are given particular attention, as is the impact of their evolution- or enlargement- on the European security architecture and European security dynamics. In this context, Russia’s repositioning as a major power appears as a shaping factor of contemporary European geopolitics. The second part presents European security from an external perspective and considers interactions between Europe and other states or regions. Security trends and actors in Europe are examined from an American, Chinese, and Indian perspective, while Europe--Africa and Europe--Middle East relations are also addressed. This book will be of great interest to students of European Security, European politics and IR in general.

Download Debating European Security and Defense Policy Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Dr. Larivé questions whether there is such a thing as a European defense and security policy. This book analyzes the integration process by clearly illustrating to the reader the two sides of the argument in order to understand the complexity of the problems in the different stages of the creation and implementation of the European defense policy. In doing so, this study asks the question of why the process has been so halting and of such limited scope. Ultimately, this book offers a unique base for fostering discussion, understanding and critical thinking on the CSDP.
