Excerpt from Scott and Scotland, or Historical and Romantic Illustrations of Scottish History As we have a great aversion to read a preface ourselves, so is it much against our will that we impose the task upon others. If a book be bad, a preface, however finely it may be written, will not improve it; and if the book be good, it needs nothing, save its own contents, to recommend it. However, it is the fashion to have a preface, and a book which wanted it would be incomplete; and therefore is it that one is prefixed to this. Excerpt from History of the Scott Family All races of men seem to have an intuitive feeling that it is a subject of legitimate pride to be one of a clan or family whose name is written large in past history and present affairs. Everybody likes to know something about his forefathers, and to be able to tell to his children the tales or stories about their ancestors, which he himself has heard from his parents. The commandment, "Honor thy father and thy mother," is good and sufficient authority for that feeling of reverence which is so generally shown towards a line of honorable ancestry. The history of the family was a matter of much importance to the Greek and Roman; the Chinese go so far as to magnify such reverence into ancestor worship and even the Red Indian of our own Northwest recorded the traditions of his ancestors on the totem of his tribe. Well, then, may the story of the chivalry, courage and even lawlessness (so often the mate of courage) of their forefathers find a responsive echo in the hearts of Scotts of the present generation. Excerpt from In the Days of Scott The days of Sir Walter Scott bring us so much nearer to our own time, that Chaucer and Shakespeare and Milton must have seemed to the author of Waverley as far removed from him as they seem re mote from ourselves. It is not easy to keep the past in true perspective. We think of our Revolutionary days as long gone by, and of Scott as modern, without reflecting that Scott was but a little child when the New England farmers fired the shot heard round the world. The impression that the father of the historical novel lived not so very long ago is due partly to the fact that he is so much more modern than the days of Chivalry and of Border warfare about which he wrote, and partly to the wholesome and abounding Vitality of this great Scotchman. Excerpt from Sir Walter Scott To the very probable remark that 'Another little book about Scott is not wanted, ' I can at least reply that apparently it is, inasmuch as the publishers proposed this volume to me, not I to them. And I believe that, as a matter of fact, no 'little book about Scott' has appeared since the Journal was completed, since the new and important instalment of letters appeared (in both cases with invaluable editorial apparatus by Mr. David Douglas), and especially since Mr. Lang's Lockhart was published. It is true that no one of these, nor any other book that is likely to appear, has altered, or is likely to alter, much in a sane estimate of Sir Walter. His own matchless character and the genius of his first biographer combined to set before the world early an idea, of which it is safe to say that nothing that should lower it need be feared, and hardly anything to heighten it can be reasonably hoped. But as fresh items of illustrative detail are made public, there can be no harm in endeavouring to incorporate something of what they give us in fresh abstracts and apercus from time to time. And for the continued and, as far as space permits, detailed criticism of the work, it may be pleaded that criticism of Scott has for many years been chiefly general, while in criticism, even more than in other things, generalities are deceptive. Excerpt from Memoirs of the Insurrection in Scotland in 1715 Mr Macknight, Treasurer, reported to the Meeting that having applied to The Right Honourable The Earl of Rosslyn for the use of the Manuscript Memoirs of John, Master Of Sinclair, his Lordship had in the handsomest manner consented to its publication by the Club, and, along with a fair Transcript, had sent the original Manuscript to Edinburgh. Having likewise applied through Isaac Bayley, Esq., to Mr Hope Scott of Abbotsford, for the use of the Transcript of the same Work, prepared for the Press, with Notes, by Sir Walter Scott, this application had been equally successful, and that the Club were now in a position to proceed, under the most favourable circumstances, with the publication of this long desired and valuable Historical Work. The Committee having heard this Report, unanimously resolved that the "Memoirs Of The Insurrection In Scotland In 1715," by John, Master Of Sinclair, be printed for the Members of The Abbotsford Club, under the joint superintendence of Mr Macknight and Mr Laing, from the original Manuscript, accompanied with Sir Walter Scott's Annotations, from the Manuscript at Abbotsford. Excerpt from Three Centuries of Scottish Literature, Vol. 1 Haliburton in his Horace in Homespun, or of Mr. J. M. Barrie in his pictures of Thrums. But probably these writers would be among the first to acknowledge that certain changes which have passed over the country since the days of Scott have narrowed the range of such work. The cities and the upper classes have been largely Angli cised. The Scotland of Lord Cockburn's Memoirs, with its Scotch-speaking Judges of Session, and its ladies of rank, entirely Scotch both in language and habits, is gone. Well marked national peculiarities are now to be found principally in the remoter and quieter rural districts, and in the lower classes of society. On the whole, it seems best to regard Scott as the last great figure in the Scotland which was the outcome of the Reformation.
