Excerpt from Scots and Scots' Descendants in America I am indebted also to the New York Public Library for permission to copy several portraits of distinguished men of the Revolutionary period, and also for portraits to the Historical Catalogue of the St. Andrew's Society of Philadelphia, prepared by the late Robert B. Beath, and for two portraits to the History of St. Andrew's Society of the State of New York, by the late George Austin Morrison, Jr. It is also gratifying to me to put on record my appreciation of the kindness shown by the large number of gentlemen I approached for their biographical material, who received me with uniform courtesy. The biographies of some of these gentlemen that were not ready for publication at this time I hope will appear in the second volume of Scots and Scots' Descendants in America. Excerpt from The Veatch Family in America: Being a History of the Descendants of James Veatch, Who Came to America From Scotland A. D. 1750 In writing a history of "The Veatch Family in America" I desire to say that I did not undertake the task because I thought I could do it any better than some other member of the family, but because I had in my possession sufficient information concerning the two great families which sprung from Nathan and Elias to make a history which would be at any rate worthy of preservation. This information was handed down to me from the family of Nathan by General James C. Veatch and from the family of Elias by Sherman William Veatch, both now deceased. This information in itself was a mere shadow or skeleton and contained barely enough to connect the two great families and prove to a positive certainty that both families came from a common ancestor James Veatch, who came to America from Scotland. Excerpt from Genealogy of the Descendents of John Ferguson: A Native of Scotland Who Emigrated to America Before the Revolutionary War John Ferguson, the son of Peter and Isabel Ferguson of Duns, Berwickshire, Scotland, who emigrated to Amer ica and settled in Newport, Rhode Island, was the pro genitor of a large family and the only one of his father's family who had male descendants to perpetuate his name. The following genealogy contains a record of his descend ants down to the present time. It is a fact worthy of more than passing notice that his descendants are scattered all over the face of the globe. They are found in the United States from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast, in South Africa in goodly numbers, in China, and a record of one marriage in Australia. It is one purpose of this book to bring together and unite in one large family, the pre sent and succeeding generations of his descendants who may feel a just pride in bearing his name.
