Excerpt from Saratoga, Lake George and Lake Champlain: A Book of Today General Johnson, (afterward Sir William), was dispatched in 1755 to take charge of affairs. He ar rived at the head of Lac du St. Sacrament August 28th, and at once renamed it, calling it Lake George, in honor of the then reigning King of Great Britain. Not content with this hydraulic victory he issued a proclamation, in which he said: I propose to go down this lake with a part of the army, and take post at the end Of it, at a pass called Ticonderogue, ' there to await the coming up of the rest of the army, and then attack Crown Point. September 8th, while General Johnson was waiting to note the effect of his proclamation, the Baron Dieskau, with men, 600 of whom were Indians, advanced to attack Fort Lyman, now Fort Edward. When within four miles of Fort Lyman the Indians refused to proceed further, it is thought from their fear of the cannon there. Dieskau then turned the head of his little army toward Lake George, and had reached the place where Williams' monument now stands, when news was brought that the English were approaching from Lake George. Forming an ambush in shape of a hollow square, open toward the north, the points extending on each Side of the road, the French awaited the com ing of the enemy, which soon appeared Eng.
