"A multi-year evaluation was conducted at Ringold Springs Hatchery (RSH) to determine if the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) should build additional rearing vessels at the hatchery as part of the required John Day mitigation. The fall Chinook salmon used in this study were initially reared at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's (ODFW) Bonneville Hatchery, then transported to RSH, and reared in either raceways (treatments) or a large earthen pond (control) for several weeks before being released in the Columbia River at RSH in June. Phase 1 of the project utilized passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags in juvenile fall Chinook salmon released from the control or treatment groups at RSH to compare migration speed and detection rates at one or more of the downstream dams. Phase 2 compared smolt-to-adult returns (SARs) of control and treatment groups as determined by total estimated recoveries of coded-wire tags (CWTs) from all recovery locations.
