Excerpt from Lectures, Verses, Speeches, Reminiscences, &C He said he should like to ask Mr. Challinor to do the public of Leek the favour of collecting together in a volume the Lectures, and he might add the Speeches which he (mr. Challinor) had delivered during a number of years. He, the Chairman felt sure that such Lectures would not only be in them selves interesting, but would also give a fair picture of the mind and thought which had been interesting and suggestive to more than one generation of fellow townsmen. The audience it was reported joined the Chairman in making this request. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Autobiography, Collateral Reminiscences, Arguments in Important Causes, Speeches, Addresses, Lectures and Other Writings, Vol. 2 Resolved, That it is the clear and decided opinion of the electors of the Eastern District, that by the constitution of this state, the freeholders thereof, duly qualified, are entitled to elect a Governor at the ensuing election, if the seat of government becomes vacant by the resignation of his Excellency Daniel D. Tompkins, in consequence of his election as Vice-President; and that we consider such vacancy inevitable. Resolved, As the sense of this meeting, that his Excellency the Governor, by a faithful adherence to his duty, and by his patriotic devotion to the interests of his country, has justly acquired the esteem and confidence of his fellow-citizens. Resolved, That in electing a successor to his Excellency, we are called upon, by every consideration which can actuate the bosoms of patriots, to fix on an individual pre-eminent for his political experience, for abilities, for integrity of private character, and all those endowments necessary to the ruler of a great community; and that in the opinion of this convention the Hon. De Witt Clinton is the individual who most eminently unites in himself these qualifications. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Reminiscences of Public Men: With Speeches and Addresses The Reminiscences and other articles in this book were written (with a few exceptions) between the years 1872 and 1876, when South Carolina was under Radical and Negro rule, before the State was "redeemed, regenerated and disenthralled" through the influence and by the efforts of General Wade Hampton. Hence the frequent allusions of the writer to the lamentable condition of South Carolina. The articles selected by the wife (unassisted) are of historic value, interesting to the surviving actors in the troublous times of Nullification, Secession and Disunion, and giving information to many of the present generation who are unacquainted with the history of that period.
