Excerpt from Religious Thought in England, Vol. 1: From the Reformation to the End of Last Century; A Contribution to the History of Theology This is not a work which requires a long preface. The title-page sufficiently indicates its object. It is not written to promote the interests of any party, and the utmost effort has been made to preserve fairness and impartiality. It is impossible, I apprehend, for any man to write on controverted subjects, even in the way of history, without indicating his own bias. It is not perhaps desirable, for that bias, however little it may appear, is really the stand-point from which he writes, and sometimes the key to his object in writing. I have tried to avoid making inferences, wishing rather to state facts honestly, believing that in every case the inferences which I should make, will be made inevitably by all impartial minds. I am dissatisfied, and I suppose most men are, with the spirit in which the history of religion in England is generally written. If it is the work of a Churchman, it takes the form of a defence of the Church of England; if by a Nonconformist, it is a defence of nonconformity. And thus a subject which, in proper hands, might be prolific for good, is sacrificed to the glorification of a sect or a party. Even the external facts of history refuse to be thus treated, and much more the thoughts which underlie the facts. There are two views of Christianity distinctly traceable in the history of the Church. They exist more or less in all systems, and often in the same mind. Excerpt from Religious Thought in England, Vol. 2: From the Reformation to the End of Last Century; A Contribution to the History of Theology The present volume completes the seventeenth century, with the addition of the chief part of the Deist controversy. I have kept strictly to the plan of merely recording what men said. The significance of these controversies and their Value to the philosophy of history may appear more clearly in the last volume. It is better that the reader should be left for the present to his own conclusions, and not be dis tracted by anything which I have to say. The mere history will itself refute many arguments which are vehemently urged in party controversies. It will also, it is to be hoped, save a great deal of writing, for many men will see that all they have to say has been said already. Excerpt from Religious Thought in England, From the Reformation to the End of Last Century, Vol. 3: A Contribution to the History of Theology AT the end of a work so extensive as this, an author, I suppose, always feels how much better it would be done if he had it to do again. When I began I had but a partial knowledge of the ground to be traversed, and of a few im portant parts I knew nothing. This is the cause of one or two irregularities which otherwise would have been avoided. Some writers, for instance, are noticed at more length than others who are perhaps of greater importance. In the preface to my essay on Pantheism I have recorded the circumstances which determined me to devote some years to the special study of theology. When I came to London, in 1859, I began a course of reading with the object of in quiring into the nature of revelation and the evidences by which it is supported. At the end of four years I had formed a plan of something like a complete history of theology, which would set forth the special character of Christianity and its relation to other religions. In the spring of 1863 I showed the outlines of my work to the late Professor Maurice, who had gone over large portions of the same field, and whose writings had been of great service to me. The Professor looked over the paper, and returning it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
