This report documents the collection and analysis of ground water samples and presents contaminant distribution and plume maps developed from data collected in the regional study and previous studies at RMA. The hydrogeologic portion of the regional study has been documented in a report entitled: Regional Ground Water Study of RMA, Report 1, Hydrogeological definition, July 1981 (82295RO1).

The basis for an investigation of possible ground water contamination from industrial operations at RMA originated as a formal letter request from the Great Western Sugar Company to RMA. This report is a composite of the basic field work that was accompanied by the USGS and the Corps of Engineers in connection with this problem. Incorporated are chemical analyses of water and field work and analysis of electrical resistivity data.

Vol I: This study was made to provide a detailed definition of the geology and ground water in the alluvium between Basin F and the North Boundary. The study area includes RMA sections 23, 24, 19, 26, and 25. Three specific questions are addressed in this study: (1) What are the hydrogeological characteristics of the alluvial aquifer from Basin F to the North Boundary?; (2) What are the locations, movements and concentrations of various pollutants in the alluvial aquifer?; and (3) Are First Creek, the sewage lagoon, sanitary sewer line and deep waste injection disposal well pollution sources concurrent with this study, a contaminant identification and migration study was performed. The results of that study are submitted separately in Basin F to the North Boundary, Vol II: ground analysis II Vol II presents answers to questions 2 and 3 above.-BKA.

The 1992 Groundwater Monitoring Program (GMP) was established as a one-year transitional program to bridge the gap between the historical Comprehensive Monitoring Program (CMP) and future pre-Record of Decision (ROD) baseline and post-ROD monitoring programs at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA). Groundwater data collected during the 1992 GMP were obtained to (1) evaluate changes in the extent of contaminant distribution in the Basin F Interim Response Action (IRA) area, (2) monitor the effectiveness of interim remedial actions, and (3) meet regulatory needs.

The groundwater monitoring history at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA) has provided the opportunity to evaluate trends in contaminant concentrations at internal and boundary groundwater containment systems. The primary purpose of this assessment was to help optimize long-term operation of internal and boundary containment systems by providing some insight into long-term trends in contaminant concentrations. The results of this study demonstrate the total organic contaminant concentrations approaching the RMA boundaries are decreasing overall. Along several plume flowpaths, steep concentration gradients are observed spatially for several organic contaminants. Concentrations decrease to below Offpost Preliminary Remediation Goals or analytical reporting limits upgradient of the Basin A-Neck area and the RMA boundaries. Although determining the mechanisms responsible for these decreases is not within the scope of this report, they undoubtedly include a combination of cessation of manufacturing/ disposal activities, implementation of IRAs and other site- specific management activities, and natural attenuation mechanisms. jg p8.
