Teaching is complex, dynamic, and constantly changing. So-called checklists for lesson observation are therefore not always helpful for instrumental and vocal teachers. Volume 5 of the Grazer Studies for Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy now conveys four areas of competencies in a playful and artistically designed card set, which is intended to stimulate a scientifically based exchange about the quality of instrumental teaching and learning. In the context of music (high) schools, the cards offer concrete entry points and imaginative ways to reflect on the complex, overlapping competencies associated with teaching and learning music and observing and developing instrumental and vocal teaching. In addition, the cards provide a playful basis for self-directed and self-regulatory feedback in collegial exchanges. Both students of instrumental and vocal pedagogy and experienced teachers can continually cultivate their individual teaching profile. Practical worksheets in this accompanying booklet support reflection on new perspectives. Reflect! also proves valuable in observing videotaped teaching sequences. Silke Kruse-Weber was Professor of Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, Chair of the Curricula Commission and Head of the Institute for Music Pedagogy until 2022. She studied piano, musicology, and received her doctorate in music pedagogy as a scholarship holder for the promotion of young female scientists at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich. Currently, she is working on knowledge transfer through collaborative reflection practices in professional development projects in (higher) music education.

What's the most important thing in the universe to you? What, more than anything else, permeates your thought life, pulls your heart strings, and propels your actions? Don't fool yourself. That supreme something-whatever it may be for you-is shaping the person you are becoming, for better or for worse, turning you into someone radiant and full of life, or making you a dim and weightless ghost of yourself. But what if we worshipped Jesus? Not the imaginary Jesus invented by televangelism, consumerism, fundamentalism, mysticism, or some political ism, but the actual Jesus we meet in the New Testament? How can he, unlike any other object of worship, enlarge our intellects, our emotions, our actions, our relationships, our imaginations, our whole selves? Drawing from science, literature, art, theology, history, music, philosophy, pop culture, and more, Thaddeus J. Williams paints a fresh and inspiring vision of how we become most truly ourselves by mirroring the Greatest Person in History.

“It’s not the doing that matters; it’s the thinking about the doing,” said John Dewey. As a teacher, you work hard to make a positive difference in the lives of your students. But this kind of progress doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t happen accidentally. It’s the result of intentionality, planning, effort . . . and thought. The difference between learning a skill and being able to implement it effectively resides in your capacity to engage in deep, continuous thought about that skill. In other words, recognizing why you do something is often more important than knowing how to do it. To help you deepen your thinking and reflect on your capacity as an educator, Pete Hall and Alisa Simeral return to the Continuum of Self-Reflection, which they introduced to coaches and administrators in their best-selling Building Teachers’ Capacity for Success, and redesign its implementation so you can take charge of your own professional growth. In these pages, you’ll find tools specifically made to enhance self-reflection on professional practice, including the Continuum of Self-Reflection and the Reflective Cycle. You’ll be able to assess your current self-reflective tendencies, identify opportunities to reflect on your instruction, and begin to forge a path toward continuous growth and educational excellence.
