The second edition comprehensively reviews the wide field of rare pulmonary diseases. Issues such as less common diseases affecting the airways, systematic disorders with lung involvement, interstitial lung diseases, and many other orphan conditions of the lungs are explored in this book. The progress and advances made in the field and the limited number of patients presenting each condition makes it very difficult for clinicians to be up-to-date in this field. Readers will discover how to diagnose and manage these rare orphan diseases. Orphan Lung Diseases: A Clinical Guide to Rare Lung Disease is a practical, informative book written by a team of international authors with much experience in rare pulmonary diseases Orphan Lung Diseases: A Clinical Guide to Rare Lung Disease, second edition provides synthesized and easily accessible information about the main orphan lung diseases, to aid clinicians in charge of patients with rare disease, or who consider the diagnosis of a rare disease in their patient. It is a practical, informative guide written by a team of international experienced authors in rare pulmonary diseases.

This book aims to be a complete guide to diagnose, manage, and treat rare lung diseases encountered by practicing pulmonologists and trainees. It extensively covers the "more common" of the rare lung diseases, categorizing them based on developmental lung anomalies in adults, airway disorders, diffuse parenchymal lung diseases, neoplasms, rare vascular disorders, and other miscellaneous conditions. This comprehensive review facilitates the study and understanding of this complex and diverse set of disorders, focusing on differential diagnosis, evidence-based discussions of management algorithms, and thoughtful analysis of treatment options. Key Features * Reviews multiple rare lung diseases, including ones acquired congenitally to be expressed in old age * Enriched with case studies and illustrations to guide respiratory physicians and trainees to devise an effective treatment plan *Focuses on concerned investigations, with a section on the role of new procedures in management

The study of rare lung disorders enhances our understanding of common pulmonary diseases such as fibrosis and emphysema. Molecular Basis of Lung Disease: Insights from Rare Disorders brings together a panel of distinguished clinicians and molecular scientists who are experts in a range of rare lung diseases and their underlying molecular defects. Each chapter focuses on the pathogenic mechanisms and therapeutic targets suggested by basic research and follows an easy to read format: brief introduction followed by discussion of epidemiology, genetic basis and molecular pathogenesis, animal models, clinical presentation, diagnostic approaches, conventional management and treatment strategies, as well as future therapeutic targets and directions. Disorders ranging from the Marfan and Goodpasture’s syndromes to Sarcoidosis and alpha one titrypsin deficiency are treated in detail. Written for pulmonary clinicians and scientists alike, Molecular Basis of Lung Disease: Insights from Rare Disorders is a comprehensive and invaluable nesource that sheds new light on the molecular mechanisms influencing the clinical presentation and treatment strategies for these debilitating disorders.

"Hypoxaemia is a major contributor to child deaths that occur worldwide each year; for a child with pneumonia hypoxaemia increases the risk of death by up to 5 times. Despite its importance in virtually all types of acute severe illness, hypoxaemia is often not well recognized or well managed, more so in settings where resources are limited. Oxygen therapy remains an inaccessible luxury for a large proportion of severely ill children admitted to hospitals in developing countries. This is particularly true for patients in small district hospitals, where, even if some facility for delivering oxygen is available, supplies are often unreliable and the benefits of treatment may be diminished by poorly maintained, inappropriate equipment or poorly trained staff with inadequate guidelines. Increasing awareness of these problems is likely to have considerable clinical and public health benefits in the care of severely ill children. Health workers should be able to know the clinical signs that suggest the presence of hypoxaemia and have more reliable means of detection of hypoxeamia. This can be achieved through more widespread use of pulse oximetry, which is a non-invasive measure of arterial oxygen saturation. At the same time oxygen therapy must be more widely available; in many remote settings, this can be achieved by use of oxygen concentrators, which can run on regular or alternative sources of power. Having effective systems for the detection and management of hypoxaemia are vital in reducing mortality from pneumonia and other severe acute illnesses. Oxygen therapy is essential to counter hypoxaemia and many times is the difference between life and death. This manual focuses on the availability and clinical use of oxygen therapy in children in health facilities by providing the practical aspects for health workers, biomedical engineers, and administrators. It addresses the need for appropriate detection of hypoxaemia, use of pulse oximetry, clinical use of oxygen and delivery systems and monitoring of patients on oxygen therapy. In addition, the manual addresses practical use of pulse oximetry, and oxygen concentrators and cylinders in an effort to improve oxygen systems worldwide."--Publisher's description.

Diagnosing rare diseases can be challenging, and treating these conditions is complex because of their often quite specific needs and treatment options. To address this, the European Respiratory Society (ERS) has published Rare Diseases of the Respiratory System. Structured into thematic sections, the book covers: the identification of rare diseases of the respiratory system and their differential diagnosis; rare diseases of the lung interstitium; rare diseases of the airways or alveoli; and rare pulmonary vascular diseases. The Guest Editors and authors belong to and/or support the vision and mission of the European Reference Network for Rare Diseases of the Respiratory System (ERN-LUNG), which offers expert support to both patients and professionals. As such, this comprehensive book will prove an excellent resource for healthcare professionals, researchers and students interested in rare diseases of the respiratory system.
