Excerpt from Rambles Round London Town SO wrote Washington Irving, and the passage is a fitting introduction 'to the grand Old Minster of which every Londoner is proud, and which no visitor to the metropolis misses seeing. One way to it, among others, is still the King Street of our old rh'yme. AS to the man that keeps the Abbey tombs, he is a very reasonable being, who will leave us to wander in the Chapels at our own discretion, if we desire to do so; while on Mon days, Tuesdays, and holidays he is not even to be seen. Excerpt from Rambles in and Near London: Or London Afternoons It is a serious thing to add another to the number of London books, and having undertaken the task, I hope to carry it out seriously. I have avoided, as far as possible, the mention of matters over which there has been controversy. Where it has not been possible I have stated the result only the result, that is, as it appears to me. In all controversies the want of what hi arithmetic is called a common denominator is the great cause of doubt. Lately, to name an example, three students of London history had an argument as to the situation of Tyburn. No conclusion was arrived at, after much learning had been displayed and much ink shed, because the three had not first agreed as to what each meant by Tyburn. To one it was a place of public execution, to another it was a manor comprising a church and a village, to the third it was a brook Nevertheless, by many such controversies, carried on, for the most part, very good-humouredly, the history of London is gradually assuming scientific proportions At first, thirty or forty years ago, it had not got beyond the point at which it was left by the Elizabethans. A History of London was a mere list of events, often misstated. The same errors were repeated in book after book, and there was not the slightest attempt to get beyond the authorities of three centuries ago. Excerpt from In London Town Bookshelves the world over sag under the weight of ponderous volumes fashioned by ge nial wise men who claim to have known London better than Pepys, Thackeray, or Dickens. Mine has been but a passing glance in the crowd - the impressions which might have been gained by any traveller who crossed the Chan nel, hired a hansom at Charing Cross, and lost himself in the throng. My home having been in France for many years, I have naturally looked at London Town through Parisian spec tacles set in an American frame, and, remember ing the sagging shelves and ponderous volumes and all the helpful data bound between their covers, I have been careful to omit all reference to the Tower and all directions how to see the cathedrals, the Houses of Parliament, the Zoo, and the British Museum, between breakfast and luncheon. Excerpt from The Outer Circle: Rambles in Remote London Where are we? I cried to the glooms And the glooms gave back: Sherrick Green. Sher rick Green, I mused. Sherrick Green. Now where in Middlesex or Hertfordshire is that And is it on the Great Central, the Northern, the Midland or on the north-western And how the devil am I to get back to town? How far we had travelled during the minutes that I lay prone I could not judge. My companions of the journey had suddenly melted into the dark ness, and with them the 'bus but a few yards distant some shrouded lights hinted at humanity. They seemed to hang in the middle air. They illuminated nothing of their surroundings, and threw no beam. Like respectable citizens, they kept themselves to themselves. I approached them, and found that they were attached to a small shop Wherein sweets, tobacco, toys and newspapers were hidden. I entered, bought a newspaper and some cigarettes, and inquired for a back number of Sexton Blake. While the good woman foraged for it I made talk. Nice part round here - Sherrick Green. Haven't been this way before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Within an Hour of London Town: Among Wild Birds and Their Haunts Often heard, but little seen, is the strong-winged, large-eyed, wide-mouthed night-swallow, or fern owl. Here and there you Will see him in the course of your evening rambles but to find his stronghold and hunting-ground you must range far afield. Out of the town of Dorking along green lanes, a good walk will bring you to Leith Hill, and thence to the common. The sun is high up yet, and as we Wish to find our owl in his night haunts first, we have plenty of time to look about us. Skirt the bog covered With cotton grass and rushes.
