I have avoided, as far as possible, the mention of matters over which there has been controversy. To one it was a place of public execution, to another it was a manor comprising a church and a village, to the third it was a brook Nevertheless, by many such controversies, carried on, for the most part, very good-humouredly, the history of London is gradually assuming scientific proportions At first, thirty or forty years ago, it had not got beyond the point at which it was left by the Elizabethans. A History of London was a mere list of events, often misstated.
