Excerpt from Queen Anne and Her Court, Vol. 2 Again and again this message reached St. J ames's. Anne's ladies at length ceased to trouble her with the news. It was more than she could endure, for dull she was indeed if her thoughts did not leap forward to the day when courtiers would in the same way watch her last agony, and post to her successor each symptom of the approaching end. Early in the morning came the courier of couriers. Who says men's thoughts are not written on their brows! When comes a great emergency - no need for words. Before a syllable was uttered, before one there had time to fall upon his knees before her, she knew that every thing was changed. Henceforth she could not breathe a wish but it was a command. She was the Queen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Queen Anne and Her Court, Vol. 1 England two little girls, each of whom in turn was crowned its queen. The epic upon which the curtain fell fifty years afterwards, when Queen Anne ceased to breathe, has a fitting prologue in the chain of events associated with the secret marriage of her mother, Anne Hyde, and its ultimate acknowledgment by her husband, the Duke of York. Excerpt from The Reign of Queen Anne, Vol. 2 of 2 Theee were at this time two European sovereigns, either of whom might, were he disposed to intervene on the one side or the other of the great struggle then going on in Europe, have exercised a serious influence on the fortunes of the war. These sovereigns were Charles the Twelfth of Sweden and Peter the Great of Russia. Neither Sweden nor Russia had any particular interest in the conflict one way or the other. The keenest observer of European politics could hardly have ventured to say at the opening of the war whether the inclinations of Charles the Twelfth or of Peter the Great might or might not have led him to this side rather than to that. But then both these rulers had already shown themselves to be possessed by such an adventurous temper, and by such an ambition for extended dominion and influence, that it would hardly be possible to count on their patient neutrality under all the conditions of the struggle. Excerpt from A History of the Reign of Queen Anne, Vol. 2 of 3 They read that "all the forms usual to the beginning of a new Parliament were observed. The queen came to the House of Peers, and the Commons being sent for, they were directed by the Lord Chancellor to return to their House and choose a Speaker, and present him that day se'night. They unanimously made choice of Mr Smith, their former Speaker, and then adjourned to the thirtieth of the same month." The Lords adjourned to the same day, after thirteen of the sixteen peers assigned to "that part of Great Britain called Scotland" had been admitted to their places by virtue of their respective writs, each being introduced by two English peers of the same rank. Thus it was tacitly assumed that the English organisation and forms would rule the new Legislature of the two nations. It could not be otherwise; and fortunately the question of giving Scots institutions a share in the new legislative action was never seriously opened, because it must have been the suggestion of an impossibility, to be met by the doctrine that the admission of any institutions or practices peculiar to the Estates of Scotland would have materially damaged the Parliament of Great Britain. In 1705, when the com pany left for their new home in the Haymarket, it was to let. Betterton took it for a night for his benefit on March 3 of that year, and Cave Underhill for his on March 31. It was not re-opened till Sept. 12, 1706, and was played in only six nights that year. It was rebuilt by Rich, but was not again acted in during Queen Anne's reign. Excerpt from Sandron Hall, or the Days of Queen Anne, Vol. 2 of 3 Canst thou recall some scene of bygone days, When as a child, and seated 'midst the flow'rs, The sweetest that the lap of earth displays, Thou didst not fear the frown of future hours? Or, like the lark, which singing, blissful flies From the green fields to heaven's purer blue, Thou - like that happy songster, sought the skies, To dream of pleasures bright as they were new? If in those moments some all-ruthless hand In wrath had swept each solace from thy sight, And seizing, left thee in a stranger land, Where all was dreary as Egyptian night, Would not thy heart have shrank beneath that blow, As leaves recoil from winter's lips of snow? After the incident related in the last chapter of the foregoing volume, it seemed as if Sandron plunged with renewed appetite into the vortex of dissipation.
