The cords produced in 1968 was nearly one-third higher than the output in 1967 (table At least three factors account ed for the increase: first, new and rebuilt paper machines required more wood pulp, thus a larger percentage of pulping capacity was utilized than in 1967. Second, the product mix was changed to one using more pulpwood and less substitute materials. Finally, one company that had not received pulpwood for several years, reported wood receipts in 1968. The greatest increase was in aspen cords), followed by elm cords), birch cords), pine cords), and maple cords). Harvest of elm was more than triple that in 1975 due to the increased use of trees with Dutch elm disease. Wisconsin Production increased cords to million cords. Wisconsin supplied 85 percent of the elm pulpwood harvested in the Lakes States as Dutch elm disease spread through out the State. Other major harvest gains were in aspen cords) and pine cords). Birch output surpassed any previous year. Pro duction from roundwood climbed in all areas of the State; the largest volume gain was in north eastern Wisconsin.
