The first edition of this work, which was included in Eugene Sheehy's Guide to Reference Books (10th ed.), became an indispensable snapshot of the state of librarianship and publishing around the world. This revised edition, an update and expansion of the original volume, offers almost 1,000 entries compared to the 644 entries of the first edition. Included are entries detailing the book trade in individual countries, biographical profiles, quotations about books and librarianship, and representations of book people in fiction and postage stamps. This revised edition also provides much new information on topics such as Latin terminology, job search strategies, and awards and grants. The heart of the volume is an alphabetical listing of countries from around the world. Each entry provides valuable data about the political and economic condition of the country, illiteracy rate, and ratio of library holdings to inhabitants. More specific information is then provided about the number of libraries and their holdings, the number of publishers, and the number of books and newspapers published per year. Libraries of special note are indicated. The rest of the volume contains fascinating information on quotations about books and librarians, biographical sketches of book people, and representations of book-related topics in creative works. This new edition also provides a guide to Latin terms used in the book world, information on job search strategies for librarians, library awards and grants, and helpful advice for librarians and supervisors.

One of the ways librarians maintain the integrity of their profession is through the creation of a robust body of professional literature. In The Librarian's Guide to Writing for Publication, Rachel Singer Gordon speaks to the hidden genius in each of us. Topics covered include, but are not limited to: queries and proposals; increasing your odds of publication; networking and collaboration; marketing and promotion; and the particular demands of authorship in an electronic environment. An appendix contains interviews with several library publishers and editors, covering the gamut of publication outlets. This is a one-stop guide for librarians at any stage of their publishing career.

In the past decade there has been an intense growth in the number of library publishing services supporting faculty and students. Unified by a commitment to both access and service, library publishing programs have grown from an early focus on backlist digitization to encompass publication of student works, textbooks, research data, as well as books and journals. This growing engagement with publishing is a natural extension of the academic library's commitment to support the creation of and access to scholarship. This volume includes chapters by some of the most talented thinkers in this area of librarianship, exploring topics such as the economics of publishing and the challenges of collaboration, and surveying the service landscape for publishing in support of a variety of formats and methods.0.

The seventh edition of the Library Publishing Directory provides a snapshot of the publishing activities of over 150 academic and research libraries, including information about the number and types of publications they produce, the services they offer authors, how they are staffed and funded, and their future plans. In documenting the breadth and depth of activities in this field, this resource aims to articulate the unique value of library publishing; to establish it as a significant and growing community of practice; and to raise its visibility within a number of stakeholder communities, including administrators, funding agencies, other scholarly publishers, librarians, and content creators. Specifically, this Directory: * Introduces readers to the growing field of library publishing and helps articulate its unique characteristics as a distinctive publishing field. * Facilitates collaboration among library publishers and other publishing entities, especially the university presses and learned societies that share their values. * Alerts authors of scholarly content to a range of potential publishing partners dedicated to supporting their experimentation with new forms of scholarly communication and open access business models. * Enables benchmarking and identification of trends in the field. The Directory is also available Open Access in several electronic formats through www.librarypublishing.org.
