Abstract: It is well understood that the world energy supplies are being depleted and increasing demand is having a great impact on the environment. The consequent increase on prices and eventual shortages lead to a growing number of individuals who try to seek out ways to use energy more wisely. Nevertheless, the consumer's perception of energy conservation actions results are very inaccurate. Consumer oriented Energy Consumption Display have increasingly become an area of research and development, but there is still a need for investigation on its application in user-oriented products. In this document, we investigate how to develop, from a product and interaction design standpoint, appliances that will give feedback related to energy consumption. The study focused on one specific product, the room air conditioning. The goal was to provide information that would stimulate more efficient use of the air conditioner. Information from many fields informed the development of this product. It includes literature on: (a) the current technology related to air conditioner and other appliances, (b) usability issues, (c) products that already give feedback on consumption and (d) human behavior. Initial concepts were presented to focus groups, along with scenarios. The results from the generative research served as basis for a refined Product Requirements list. The final product includes the interface developed for the air conditioner and a few possible applications. The study generates material that can be applied to other products that consume energy in addition to the air conditioner used in the study. Consumers will not only make decisions on purchases based on efficiency but also change their habits so as to better conserve, bringing us closer to a sustainable energy use, if they are able to have consumption feedback on each appliance.

Residential energy consumption accounts for 22% of the total energy use in the United States. The consumer's perception of energy usage and conservation are very inaccurate which is leading to growing number of individuals who try to seek out ways to use energy more wisely. Hence behavioral change in consumers with respect to energy use, by providing energy use feedback may be important in reducing home energy consumption. Real-time energy information feedback delivered via technology along with feedback interventions has been reported to produce up to 20 percent declines in residential energy consumption through past research and pilot studies. There are, however, large differences in the estimates of the effect of these different types of feedback on energy use. As part of the Energize Phoenix Program, (a U.S. Department of Energy funded program), a Dashboard Study was conducted by the Arizona State University to estimate the impact of real-time, home-energy displays in conjunction with other feedback interventions on the residential rate of energy consumption in Phoenix, while also creating awareness and encouragement to households to reduce energy consumption. The research evaluates the effectiveness of these feedback initiatives. In the following six months of field experiment, a selected number of low-income multi-family apartments in Phoenix, were divided in three groups of feedback interventions, where one group received residential energy use related education and information, the second group received the same education as well as was equipped with the in-home feedback device and the third was given the same education, the feedback device and added budgeting information. Results of the experiment at the end of the six months did not lend a consistent support to the results from literature and past pilot studies. The data revealed a statistically insignificant reduction in energy consumption for the experiment group overall and inconsistent results for individual households when compared to a randomly selected control sample. However, as per the participant survey results, the study proved effective to foster awareness among participating residents of their own patterns of residential electricity consumption and understanding of residential energy use related savings.

Scientists and elected officials agree that climate change is an issue that can no longer be ignored and residential energy use is a prime target for reducing emissions. One promising strategy for promoting conservation is the provision of feedback about energy use. Feedback--the process of giving people information about their behavior to reinforce and/or change behavior--is receiving increasing attention due to changes in technology and infrastructure that allow information to be collected, processed, and sent back to consumers quickly and cheaply. Many programs and products have emerged in recent years, demonstrating political and technical potential for wide-scale provision of energy feedback. However, past work has been critiqued for its lack of theoretical rigor; many have called for more attention to the conditions under which theories are successful in explaining conservation. This dissertation presents an interdisciplinary, mixed-methods approach to understanding the role of feedback in residential energy conservation through four distinct yet interrelated studies. The first utilizes meta-analysis of 42 studies to examine whether feedback has an overall effect on energy use and how this effect is moderated by variables related to treatment, study quality, and publication. The second introduces a taxonomy of feedback technology derived from a content analysis of 196 devices; it presents a list of key energy feedback characteristics and a taxonomy structure for categorizing energy feedback according to these features. The third presents mixed-methods analysis of characteristics and user experience of naturalistic users of energy feedback from an online survey of 846 individuals. And the final study introduces and tests the Usability Perception Scale (UPscale) with psychometric analysis from an 1103-person experimental study; it integrates approaches from psychology and human-computer interaction to begin addressing the need for scalable, replicable instruments for testing mediation of feedback effectiveness. As a whole, this manuscript seeks to extend what is known about energy feedback and to make suggestions for future research. While there is much research addressing whether feedback works, there has been little research into the more nuanced questions of how and for whom it works best. This dissertation aims to address this need.

We implemented a Randomized Controlled Trial to estimate the impact of real-time energy consumption feedback on residential energy use. A random half of the participant households were equipped with an energy consumption monitor that uses smart-meter data to relay information on real-time energy use. The feedback resulted in a 6.9 and 2.2 percent reduction in, respectively, gas and electricity consumption. While we do not detect any appliance-specific changes in the use of electricity, gas savings are the result of especially changes in space heating, as savings are larger on colder days. We probe the underlying mechanisms by means of a survey. We find that the display's main impact is via raising the salience of energy costs, suggesting that the display is effective in helping households to better align their actual energy consumption with their optimal consumption pattern.
