The progress in lattice QCD, especially the capacity to calculate at ever lower quark masses, combined with modern techniques of chiral extrapolation, means that one can now determine the strange quark contribution to the vector form factors of the nucleon with remarkable precision. We review these recent landmark calculations and compare them with the most recent global analysis of the experimental situation using parity violating electron scattering.

We review a recent theoretical determination of the strange quark content of the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon. These are compared with a global analysis of current experimental measurements in parity-violating electron scattering.

This thesis discusses two key topics: strangeness and charge symmetry violation (CSV) in the nucleon. It also provides a pedagogical introduction to chiral effective field theory tailored to the high-precision era of lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Because the nucleon has zero net strangeness, strange observables give tremendous insight into the nature of the vacuum; they can only arise through quantum fluctuations in which strange–antistrange quark pairs are generated. As a result, the precise values of these quantities within QCD are important in physics arenas as diverse as precision tests of QCD, searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, and the interpretation of dark matter direct-detection experiments. Similarly, the precise knowledge of CSV observables has, with increasing experimental precision, become essential to the interpretation of many searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. In this thesis, the numerical lattice gauge theory approach to QCD is combined with the chiral perturbation theory formalism to determine strange and CSV quantities in a diverse range of observables including the octet baryon masses, sigma terms, electromagnetic form factors, and parton distribution functions. This thesis builds a comprehensive and coherent picture of the current status of understanding of strangeness and charge symmetry violation in the nucleon.

The contributions of strange quarks to the electric and magnetic form factors of the nucleon provide unique insights into the nature of nonperturbative QCD. We present recent results on both the theoretical understanding and the experimental determination of the contribution of strangeness to the low momentum form factors.

The G^0 experiment is dedicated to the determination of the strange quark's contribution to the electric and magnetic nucleon form factors, provided by parity-violating asymmetries of cross-sections measured with longitudinaly polarized electrons in elastic electron-proton scattering and quasi-elastic electron-deuteron scattering. Forward angle measurements, which have been performed in Hall C of Jefferson Laboratory, have provided a linear combination of electric and magnetic vector form factors for momentum transfers in the range 0.1 to 1 (GeV/c)^2. Backward angle measurements, which will be performed starting in 2006, will allow the complete separation of the form factors at Q^2 of 0.23 and 0.63 (GeV/c)^2.

G0 is a parity violating electron scattering program at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, and its forward angle measurement is reported in this thesis. In this experiment, parity violating asymmetries of elastic electron-proton scattering were measured over a range of four-momentum transfer from 0.12 to 1.0 (GeV/c)2. From the asymmetries, linear combinations of the strange electric and magnetic form factors of the nucleon, G$s\atop{E}$ + [eta]G$s\atop{M}$, are extracted over the same kinematic range. These results, combined with existing data from other experiments, indicate that both G$s\atop{E}$ and [eta]G$s\atop{M}$ are non-zero and dependent on the four-momentum transfer, with imply non-trivial strange quark contributions to the low energy electromagnetic properties of the nucleon.

CIPANP 2009 explores areas of common interest between nuclear physicists, high energy (particle) physicists and astrophysicists. These areas range from studies of the strong interactions that bind nuclei together to physics of the very early Universe and include such topics as neutrinos, hadron physics, spin physics, heavy ion physics, QCD and heavy flavor physics. The Conference papers include descriptions of searches for "new physics", phenomena that cannot be accounted for by current theories.

This book contains the proceedings of the third international workshop on From Parity Violation to Hadronic Structure and More. The many applications of parity violation are way beyond the scope of what Lee and Yang could have imagined fifty years after their proposal. For the physics topics discussed during this workshop, the application of parity violation has become a standard work horse allowing for the extraction of many physics topics in different experiments.

We studied the strange contributions to the elastic vector and axial form factors of the nucleon using all available elastic electroweak scattering data. Specifically, we combine elastic nu-p and nubar-p scattering cross-section data from the Brookhaven E734 experiment with elastic ep and quasi-elastic ed and e-4He scattering parity-violating asymmetry data from the SAMPLE, HAPPEx, PVA4 and G0 experiments. We not only determined these form factors at individual values of momentum-transfer (Q2), as other groups have done recently, but also fit the Q2-dependence of these form factors using simple functional forms. I present an overview of the G0 backward-angle experiment as well as the results of these fits using existing data, along with some expectations of how we can improve our knowledge of these form factors if the MicroBooNE collaboration completes their experiment.
