The papers on energy efficiency in operations cover lifted turbulent jet flame in a cross-flow; novel hybrid biomass and coal processes; and the adoption of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The papers on design and safety include studies on the optimal design and operation of a GTL process and efficient design, operating, and control strategies for LNG plants. The papers on operational excellence deal with topics such as chemicals in gas processing; the monitoring and optimization of hydrocarbon separation equipment; and the inhibition of gas hydrate formation. * Provides a state-of-the-art review of gas processing technologies * Covers design, operating tools, and methodologies * Includes case studies and practical applications

This book is about the judicial discretion to stay criminal proceedings, and is the first full-length monograph to be published in England on the topic. It presents a fresh perspective on the discretion under consideration by setting the discretion against the general backdrop of the law of criminal evidence. In recent times, a number of evidence scholars have demonstrated persuasively that every exclusionary rule and exclusionary discretion in the law of criminal evidence can be explained by reference to the protection of the innocent from wrongful conviction and/or the protection of the moral integrity of the criminal process. It is demonstrated in this book that the judicial discretion to stay criminal proceedings can, and should, be viewed in the same way. A comparative perspective is adopted where appropriate, with particular reference being made to the jurisdictions of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and the United States.

This book provides an in-depth examination of the judicial response at the internationalcriminal tribunals (ICTs) to the violation of procedural standards in thepre-trial phase of proceedings. It does so against the backdrop of the assumption thatcertain particularities of international criminal proceedings may warrant a differentapproach to the matter than at the national level. By reference to relevant human rights standards and to national criminal procedure,as well as to theoretical accounts of the judicial response to pre-trial procedural violations, this book assesses the ICTs’ law and practice in this regard, thereby identifyingpoints of concern and making suggestions for improvement. In doing so, it considersthe most suitable rationale for responding to procedural violations committed in thepre-trial phase of international criminal proceedings and the merits of judicial discretionin this context, as well as the impact of certain particularities of such proceedingson the determination of how to address procedural violations. The book is intended for academics and practitioners in the field of (international)criminal law who want to gain a deeper understanding of the possible impact ofpre- trial procedural violations on criminal proceedings. Kelly Pitcher is Assistant Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at LeidenUniversity in The Netherlands.

Infringement proceedings constitute a signi¬ficant proportion of proceedings before the Court of Justice of the European Union and play a key role in the development of EU law. Their immediate purpose is to obtain a declaration that a Member State has, by its conduct, failed to ful¬l an obligation under the EU Treaties. The aim is to bring that conduct and its effects to an end and, ultimately, to eliminate infringements across the Union. This book – the ¬first comprehensive and detailed full-length work in English on infringement proceedings under Articles 258-260 TFEU – provides not only an in-depth discussion on the role and function of infringement proceedings within the EU legal order, but also a critical assessment of the procedures as they currently stand, complete with proposals for future changes. Recognizing that Member States’ compliance with EU law is an integral part of the task of ensuring the rule of law throughout the Union, the author thoroughly explains the functioning of infringement proceedings, their requirements and related policies, including issues such as: – the Commission’s discretion to bring a case before the Court; – the author of the infringement, including national courts or private entities; – Member States’ procedural and substantive defences; – the different procedures under Articles 258, 259 and 260(2) and (3) TFEU; – rights of private parties; – interim measures; – ¬financial sanctions; – Member States’ liability; and – the roles played by the European Parliament and the Ombudsman. Particular attention is devoted to rules that have not yet been fully interpreted, or where the current interpretation or application of the rules seems problematic. The book tackles, in particular, whether infringement proceedings, as they stand, constitute an appropriate means of ensuring observance by Member States’ authorities of the EU acquis, and, if not, what reforms should be implemented in order to achieve this in the future. Such a detailed and in-depth examination of this fundamental procedure of EU law will be of great and long-lasting interest to EU and Member State administrators, legal practitioners and academics. Luca Prete is currently a référendaire (Legal Secretary) for Advocate General Wahl at the Court of Justice of the European Union, on secondment from the Legal Service of the European Commission. He is also a member of the Centre for European Law of the Free University of Brussels (VUB). He has published several articles in the fi¬eld of EU law and is a regular speaker at EU law seminars and conferences.
