Internal friction measurements were made on an outstandingly good quartz crystal. Several internal friction peaks are observed and these are discussed. In addition a previously unreported anomaly is observed in the resonant frequency versus temperature curve for the quartz crystal. These measurements were made over a temperature range of approximately -125C to 300C. The internal friction of sodium chloride was measured at room temperature in a free decay apparatus. (Author).

This book is a unique collection of experimental data in the field of internal friction, anelastic relaxation, and damping properties of metallic materials. It reviews virtually all anelastic relaxation phenomena ever published. The reader is also supplied with explanations of the basic physical mechanisms of internal friction, a summary of typical effects for different groups of metals, and more than 2000 references to original papers.

An apparatus, which permits routine measurement of internal friction as low as 2 x 10 to the minus 7th power and Young's modulus as a function of temperature, frequency, and strain amplitude in extremely low loss materials, is presented. The system described herein can be used to investigate a variety of materials and is not hampered by the limitations placed upon composite resonator systems. It has been successfully used to study internal friction in the amplitude-independent and amplitude-dependent regions in pure and CaCl2 doped NaCl. (Author).
