This collected volume is dedicated to the role of prayer books in lay piety in medieval and early modern contexts. Instead of focusing on individual examples, it places them within the broader genre of devotional literature and considers them in connection with prevailing cultural, religious and artistic developments, taking into account the Reformation, the printing press and growing interest in lay piety, in the context of increasing individualism, developing literacy, privatization and/or personalization of religion. Contextualising devotional literature, the volume refines understandings of religious practice fostered by traditional Catholicism and early modern Protestantism and its relationship with the written word, locating the use of books within a devotional 'diet' that included oral recitation of prayers as well as contemplation of images. Stressing continuities, often against the grain of existing literature, this volume highlights differences between regional cultures of prayer in contrast to norms set by the universal Church and emphasizes the tension between public/communal and private/individual devotion.

Download Late Anglo-Saxon Prayer in Practice Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This monograph examines Anglo-Saxon prayer outside of the communal liturgy. With a particular emphasis on its practical aspects, it considers how small groups of prayers were elaborated into complex programs for personal devotion, resulting in the forerunners of the Special Offices. With examples being taken chiefly from major eleventh-century collections of prayers, liturgy and medical remedies, the methodologies of Anglo-Saxon compilers are examined, followed by five chapters on specialist kinds of prayer: to the Trinity and saints, for liturgical feasts and the canonical hours, to the Holy Cross, for protection and healing, and confessions. Analyzing prayer in a wide range of different situations, this book argues that Anglo-Saxon manuscripts may have included far more private offices than have so far been recognized, if we see them for what they were.

Download Prayers Ancient and Modern Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This collection of prayers for daily use has been gathered from many sources, ancient and modern. It has historical interest, and the literary quality has been carefully considered, but the primary object is to nourish the spiritual life. As the design is to provide a brief selection for every day, in many cases a portion only of a long prayer is given, or it is condensed by omission, but alterations have been made as sparingly as possible. - Preface.

Excerpt from Early Prayer Books of America: Being a Descriptive Account of Prayer Books Published in the United States, Mexico and Canada In the preparation of this book, I have ventured upon a subject that for the most part has not been written upon before. It is true that valuable works have treated of the Prayer Book of the American Episcopal Church, but of liturgies generally, as they have appeared in this country, little has been said, except in a fragmentary way, chiefly in magazine literature. I have had, as a result, to encounter all the difficulties of a pioneer, and in some directions the material to draw from has been at the best but limited. Unfortunately little attention has been given to collecting and preserving prayer books. Private collectors are very few in number, and directors of public libraries have, as a rule, given scarcely any consideration to books of this kind. It is rather remarkable that even theological seminaries - with a few exceptions - have not been sufficiently interested to include prayer books in their libraries.
