The challenges that face student-athletes when they retire from formal sport participation coincides with their loss of their athletic identity (how much they identify with their athlete role), often geographic upheaval, uncertainty of the future regarding alternate roles, and change in social support systems, which make this period more difficult to adjust to. This study explored the experiences of the retirement transition of graduating student-athletes. The current study aims to examine this unique experience through qualitative investigation into the collective experiences of student-athletes to identify overarching relevant themes common throughout this experience. The participants were 13 student-athletes who graduated in the Spring Semester of 2017 (May- June 2017), played their sport at a National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Institution at the Varsity level, and were not continuing to play their sport at the elite level. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants between five and eight months post-graduation. Thematic analysis was used to categorize participants' responses and allow for an in-depth investigation of different factors affecting personal adjustment throughout this period. The five overarching themes identified were: the need for social connection, the impact of a goal-oriented mindset, preparedness for the transition, translatable skills from being a student-athlete, and the perspective of their own identity and purpose. The ability to shift perspective to retrospectively appreciate the student-athlete experience, while incorporating it as one part of their overall life journey, is discussed as a protective factor for positive transition outcomes. As the large majority of collegiate athletes do not continue to play their sport professionally, this population is in high need of continued guidance. The present work can inform interventions to aid student-athletes in this difficult transitional period. Mentorship from previously graduated student-athletes, coaches, or administrative programs are suggested as a tangible positive intervention strategy based off of the results.

"Introduction: Despite the substantial amount of literature on career transitions in sport, there is insufficient research examining the social support system within college athletics as it is an important resource for student-athletes, especially for their success later in life. Likewise, there are currently no studies exploring athletic retirement from the perspective of student-athlete support or development services, a section of athletic departments that provides programming for the success of their student-athletes. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the implications of athletic retirement from the perspective of directors and/or associate directors of student-athlete support or development services of NCAA Division I universities. Methods/Data Analysis: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants (n = 8) to explore their perceptions about the factors that lead to a successful or unsuccessful transition out of sport. Participants further described how their current services and programs helped student-athletes overcome the obstacles of this transitional period. Results: An inductive data analysis was used to organize participants' responses into themes and subthemes related to the original research questions. Although programming varied by institution, the participants observed that most of their student-athletes experienced a successful transition out of sport as their services and programs helped them effectively cope with the demands of athletic retirement. When participants did cite problems with the process of athletic retirement, they reported issues surrounding a salient athletic identity, such as a lack of career development, a sudden loss of the sport environment, and mental and physical health risks. Finally, participants believed that evidence-based services and programs need to be implemented to meet the needs of both current and former student-athletes. During the 2018-2019 academic year, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) reported 1,004,450 student-athletes across Division I, II, and III universities. Of these athletes, only a small percentage will go on to play at a professional level. The majority of these student-athletes will go through an out-of-sport transition that, without proper preparation, can result in a variety of psychosocial difficulties. However, there are opportunities for student-athletes, athletic departments, academic departments, and psychological counseling centers to target different factors that could increase the likelihood of experiencing a positive out-of-sport transition. The focus of this systematic review was to address two primary research questions: (1) What risk and protective factors make the out-of-sport transition more manageable or difficult for NCAA athletes? and (2) what intervention programs are universities implementing to help student-athletes prepare for this transition? To present the findings for these questions, a mixed-methods methodological approach was utilized. Results are presented through a narrative synthesis to ensure easy accessibility and comprehension of the material by athletes and university officials. This systematic review joins emerging literature that recognizes the uniqueness of the college years and experiences and acknowledges the need to do more to prepare and protect student-athletes.

Collegiate student-athletes have a unique experience that is different in many ways from non-athlete students within the college environment. Student-athletes form a distinct subculture within the greater college culture (Shulman & Bowen, 2001). During the 2012-13 academic year, there were 463,202 student-athletes; however, less than 2% of all collegiate student-athletes will advance to the professional levels (NCAA, 2013 Sept.; NCAA, 2013 Oct.). This leaves the overwhelming majority of student-athletes with the task of transitioning to life beyond athletics, despite much time, mental and physical effort devoted to fostering an athletic identity. Due to the time and energy demands placed on elite college athletes (i.e., NCAA Division I student-athletes), they may have less opportunity to explore and develop alternative identities and career paths. The NCAA has several systems of support to foster student-athlete well-being; however, there appears to be a lack in recognition of the potential difficulty student-athletes may have in transitioning to life beyond collegiate athletics. There also appears to be a lack in discussion of how to best assist student-athletes in this transition upon completion of their collegiate athletic career. Seeking to provide a resource in an area that has not been sufficiently addressed, a program is proposed to assist student-athletes transition to life beyond athletics, entitled Success Through Athletics. Utilizing the format of a logic model (Savaya & Waysman, 2005), the current program incorporates knowledge of the unique experience of student-athletes, as well as literature on transitions and developmental theory specific to student-athletes, and is intended for implementation within an athletic department over the initial four years of a student-athletes collegiate career. The overarching structure of the four year Success Through Athletics program is as follows: (a) year one, goal development and encouragement of dualistic thinking; (b) year two, skills identification and movement toward multiplistic thinking; (c) year three, values identification and continued development of multiplistic thinking; and (d) year four, self-awareness and movement toward relativistic thinking.
