Excerpt from Philosophical Dissertations on the Egyptians and Chinese, Vol. 1 of 2 Such is nearly the order we have followed in comparing a celebrated nation of Africa, with another equally remarkable in Alia. In works of pure amufement, fome phrafes frequently decide the fate of a whole book; becaufe where neither depth of thought nor erudition are requifrte, if one pallage difpleafes, it is na tural to fuppofe all the reit defeétive. But in philofophieal difcuflions, which are connected together almofi imperceptibly, nothing can be underflood if the chain efcapes, or the author is not regularly followed. Excerpt from Philosophical Dissertations on the Egyptians and Chinese, Vol. 2 of 2: Translated From the French of Mr. De Pauw, Private Reader of Frederic II., King of Prussia It is very remarkable, that the inhabitants of so many regions, on three parts of our globe, have endeavoured to fortify themselves in this manner, chiefly against the Tartars and Arabs: but no appearances of any such works have ever been discovered in America. Any Chinese at this day would be much astonished to fee the obelisks of Alexandria, or the Matary, and still more those pyramids, ranged to the weft of the Nile, from Hauara to Gizeb. So far from finding monuments of that kind in China, no person there ever heard them even mentioned. The emperor Kien-long, of the dynasty of Dajdzin, who fat on the throne when this book was written, might perhaps have possessed some paintings less defective than those seen in that country until the year one thousand seven hundred and thirty: but not one of his houses exhibited a single fine column. The princes, who preceded him since Yo, if ever such a person existed, employed no other than wooden pillars, destitute of all fixed proportions, in their palaces, pagodas, and tombs.
