Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 There are some who see this man as a predator. Nothing more. They see him as nothing more than a middle-aged man sitting at a bar having a beer. But there are others who see him as a predator who cannot stop thoughts of killing and rendering women unconscious. #2 The author was watching the woman, who was dressed in a very provocative manner, and was infatuated with her. He wanted to talk to her, but he knew he couldn’t. His motive was clear: she fit perfectly into an assortment of prey he had collected while he was in prison from 1988 to 1999. #3 He had decided to talk to her. He was waiting for her to leave so he could follow her. It felt right. #4 He had grown up in Berlin. The suburbs. The sticks. It was strange and humiliating, he thought, being back in the same house where it all began forty-something years ago. He had a few regular prostitutes he met at the bar in Hartford. He liked to treat himself once in a while.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Northampton, a small town in Massachusetts, is the epitome of a classic New England landscape. It is full of agricultural history and laid-back living. Nothing ever happens there of any national interest. #2 The Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Leeds, Massachusetts, has served the health needs of Massachusetts veterans since 1924. It provides tertiary psychiatric and substance abuse services, as well as primary and secondary levels of medical care to a veteran population of men and women in western Massachusetts of more than eighty-five thousand. #3 Stanley Jagodowski, a veteran who had suffered from non-insulin-dependent diabetes and high blood pressure, was transferred to the Leeds facility in August 1995. His doctors had predicted that he wouldn’t be returning home again. #4 On August 14, doctors had agreed that Jagodowski was doing so well that he could leave Ward C and transfer to the long-term nursing care unit. The only thing standing in his way was a bed.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 On October 3, 1997, Tim Rysedorph, a drummer, met Caroline Parker, a singer, at a bar in Troy, New York. They started dating and seemed to be making a go of it. But some would later question the strength of their marriage, saying Tim could never do enough for Caroline. #2 Tim and Caroline had lived in Mechanicville, New York, just outside Albany, for the first ten years of their relationship. In 1995, they had gotten into some rather large financial problems, and had rented a small two-bedroom apartment in Saratoga Springs. #3 On Friday, October 3, 1997, Caroline paged Tim numerous times. She was worried about her sister's wedding the next day, and where in the hell her husband was. She eventually woke up and realized that Tim hadn't come home. #4 When Tim did not return home that night, Caroline was frantic. She had his phone, but could not make out what he was saying in the background. She was jumpy and nervous, and did not know what to do.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The Yoders had a son, Adam, who was the practice’s full-time office manager. He had a white towel slung over his shoulder as he made his way into the kitchen to rehydrate. His parents had gotten to know his girlfriend, Katie, fairly well as she immersed herself in the daily business of the practice. #2 The Yoders began to divide their workweek between Mary and Bill, with Katie Conley running the office, and son Adam completely out of the picture. The family was planning to sell the business and travel. #3 In 2015, the Yoders, who ran a chiropractic practice in the Mohawk Valley, were looking to sell the business. Every time the subject came up, however, the process of selling seemed overwhelming and time consuming. #4 On July 20, 2015, Mary and Bill Yoder were planning a much-needed, long-awaited vacation to Europe. They had never taken such an extended trip together.

Sample Book Insights: #1 The family of Jo Reynolds, Tony’s wife, had a difficult time dealing with Adrianne, Tony’s sixteen-year-old daughter. They had reconciled and were on the path of healing a broken relationship. #2 When Jo passed by Adrianne’s room, she noticed her work clothes laid out. She was not the least bit worried, as she knew Adrianne would never blow off her shift. She had made lots of friends since moving into town. #3 When Tony and Jo got to Checkers, Adrianne’s boss said that she hadn’t heard from her. Something wasn’t right. They took off home and thought about the past few weeks at the house, and all the stress between Jo and Adrianne. They thought about what might have happened to Adrianne. #4 Adrianne had gone out and gotten her eyebrow pierced, just like her friends had told her not to. She was also interested in the Juggalo culture, which was a mix of antiestablishment, two-man band Insane Clown Posse and violent, sexist, and vulgar music.

Trixy is a 1904 novel by the best-selling but largely forgotten American author and women’s rights activist Elizabeth Stuart Phelps. The book decries the then common practice of vivisection, or scientific experiments on live animals. In Trixy, contemporary readers can trace the roots of the early animal rights movement in Phelps’s influential campaign to introduce legislation to regulate or end this practice. Phelps not only presents a narrative polemic against the cruelty of vivisection but argues that training young doctors in it makes them bad physicians. Emily E. VanDette’s introduction demonstrates that Phelps’s protest writing, which included fiction, pamphlets, essays, and speeches, was well ahead of its time. Though not well known today, Phelps’s 1868 spiritualist novel, The Gates Ajar, which offered a comforting view of the afterlife to readers traumatized by the Civil War, was the century’s second best-selling American novel, surpassed only by Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Recently scholars and readers have begun to reexamine Phelps’s significance. As contemporary authors, including Peter Singer, Jonathan Safran Foer, Donna J. Haraway, Gary L. Francione, and Carol J. Adams, have extended her vision, they have also created new audiences for her work.
