What does Avalon have to do with Neverland? Why are the children the only humans who can use Avalon’s magic? What are the differences between J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan and Brom’s Child Thief? Brom wrote a haunting reimagination of a book that is still one of the most important for children. Yet, The Child Thief is not a book designed for children. There is a great difference between the flying boy in Barrie’s original and Brom’s Peter. This poses the question, which traits of the original Peter Pan did Brom use as they were and which ones did he give a twist? Every change that Brom made has implications that go beyond a simple adaption to our modern taste. Since The Child Thief also does not follow Barrie’s Peter Pan concerning the storyline or the narrative style, the formerly posed question encompasses therefore the whole The Child Thief. This treatise aims to answer these questions and to give an outlook on possible further research.

Download J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan In and Out of Time Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Celebrating 100 years of Peter Pan, this fourth volume in the Centennial Studies series explores the cultural contents of Barrie's creation and the continuing impact of Peter Pan on children's literature and popular culture today, especially focusing on the fluctuations of time and narrative strategies. This collection of essays on Peter Pan is separated into four parts. The first section is comprised of essays placing Barrie's in its own time period, and tackles issues such as the relationship between Hook and Peter in terms of child hatred, the similarities between Peter and Oscar Wilde, Peter Pan's position as an exemplar of the Cult of the Boy Child is challenged, and the influence of pirate lore and fairy lore are also examined. Part two features an essay on Derrida's concept of the grapheme, and uses it to argue that Barrie is attempting to undermine racial stereotypes. The third section explores Peter Pan's timelessness and timeliness in essays that examine the binary of print literacy and orality; Peter Pan's modular structure and how it is ideally suited to video game narratives; the indeterminacy of gender that was common to Victorian audiences, but also threatening and progressive; Philip Pullman and J.K. Rowling, who publicly claim to dislike Peter Pan and the concept of never growing up, but who are nevertheless indebted to Barrie; and a Lacanian reading of Peter Pan arguing that Peter acts as "the maternal phallus" in his pre-Symbolic state. The final section looks at the various roles of the female in Peter Pan, whether against the backdrop of British colonialism or Victorian England. Students and enthusiasts of children's literature will find their understanding of Peter Pan immensely broadened after reading this volume.

Download Who is Peter Pan? Influences from the biography of the author J. M. Barrie on the creation of the character Peter Pan Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Essay from the year 2011 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, language: English, abstract: This essay looks into the biography of J.M. Barrie trying to assess which one of the Llewelyn Davies boys had the biggest influence on the character Peter Pan or if on of the boys was Peter Pan. These days not a lot of people know that Peter Pan is not just a Disney movie and most of the people who do know that Peter Pan was originally a play are not aware that although the story might be fiction the character of Peter Pan is not. This paper will look into different aspects of J.M. Barrie’s life, the author of Peter Pan, and it will show that there were certain experiences that inspired him to come up with the story of a boy called Peter Pan. It is safe to say that Barrie had two main sources of inspiration, his older brother David and the Llewelyn Davies family. Barrie always claimed that he created Peter Pan by violently rubbing the five Llewelyn Davies boys together and that Pan was the spark he got from them. However, the most interesting aspect is finding similarities between Peter Pan and Barrie himself.
