PET/CT is an integral part of the evaluation of patients who have head and neck cancer. In this issue, the state of the art in PET/CT imaging is discussed. The issue starts with an overview of FDG-PET/CT, PET and MRI for normal anatomy, including pitfalls and artifacts. This topic is followed by a review of FDG-PET/CT for initial and subsequent therapy evaluation; progressing to PET and MRI. Other articles discuss SUV as a prognostic factor in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, PET in head and neck cancer radiotherapy treatment planning, PET in decision making for neck dissection after radiation treatment, and newer methods for improving yield from FDG-PET imaging for accurate staging, determining tumor biology, and assessing prognosis. The issue focuses on some of the most cutting-edge applications, such as new tracers PET in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (including FLT and hypoxia imaging). PET scans in thyroid cancer is also discussed.

Imaging is crucial in the multidisciplinary approach to head and neck cancer management. The rapid technological development of recent years makes it necessary for all members of the multidisciplinary team to understand the potential applications, limitations, and advantages of existing and evolving imaging technologies. It is equally important that the radiologist has sufficient clinical background knowledge to understand the clinical significance of imaging findings. This book provides an overview of the findings obtained using different imaging techniques during the evaluation of head and neck neoplasms, both before and after therapy. All anatomic areas in the head and neck are covered, and the impact of imaging on patient management is discussed in detail. The authors are recognized experts in the field, and numerous high-quality images are included. This second edition provides information on the latest imaging developments in this area, including the application of PET-CT and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging.

This pocket book is an up-to-date guide to the diagnostic imaging of head and neck cancers. The focus is particularly on FDG PET/CT, with coverage of the basic principles, clinical indications, typical and atypical appearances, normal variations and artifacts, advantages, limitations, and pitfalls. Consideration is also given to emerging roles for PET/CT in head and neck cancer, including radiotherapy planning and treatment response monitoring, and to radiotracers beyond FDG. In addition, succinct information is provided on clinical presentation, diagnosis, staging, pathology, management, and other diagnostic imaging techniques. A brief discourse on the practice of guideline adoption is included. The book is published within the Springer series Clinicians’ Guides to Radionuclide Hybrid Imaging (compiled under the auspices of the British Nuclear Medicine Society) and will be an excellent asset for clinicians, nuclear medicine physicians, radiologists, radiographers, technologists, and nurses who work in the field of head and neck cancer.

This concise integrated handbook looks at all available imaging methods for head and neck cancer, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each method. The information is provided in a clinical context and will guide radiologists as to the information the clinician actually needs when managing a patient with head and neck cancer. It will also provide the clinician with the advantages and limitations of imaging. The text therefore deals with Ultrasound, CT and MRI. The initial chapters aim to give the reader a core knowledge, which can be used in imaging by the various methods described. The subsequent chapters are directed towards clinical problems and deal with the common cancers in a logical order.

A single-authored, clinically oriented text on imaging of the head-and-neck, frequently a difficult area for radiology residents and general radiologists to master. Readers will find key diseases highlighted and a guide to differential diagnosis of various conditions. Though the primary image focus is on MRI, correlations with CT and PET images and strong coverage of anatomic variants--to distinguish those from the presence of disease--are major strengths of the book. Other features include excellent image quality, diagrams and tables. While this text does not replace the need for a comprehensive text, it should be an essential resource at the reading station and on rotation.

This book constitutes the First 3D Head and Neck Tumor Segmentation in PET/CT Challenge, HECKTOR 2020, which was held in conjunction with the 23rd International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention, MICCAI 2020, in Lima, Peru, in October 2020. The challenge took place virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2 full and 8 short papers presented together with an overview paper in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected form numerous submissions. This challenge aims to evaluate and compare the current state-of-the-art methods for automatic head and neck tumor segmentation. In the context of this challenge, a dataset of 204 delineated PET/CT images was made available for training as well as 53 PET/CT images for testing. Various deep learning methods were developed by the participants with excellent results.
