Would you like to have Thanksgiving without yelling at your uncle about politics? How about spending the day with your in-laws on the opposite side of the aisle without walking on eggshells? Your best friend from high school? Your neighbor? The list goes on. Persuade, Don’t Preach gives you tools to have productive conversations with those you don’t agree with. Description As a society, we’ve become so polarized, we barely know how to talk to each other anymore. When we disagree, we often preach. And then the other person freezes or explodes. We wind up even more polarized than we were to begin with. What’s the key to get past this? It all comes down to persuading instead of preaching. Karen Tibbals distills the latest social science research to create a practical plan for talking to others in a respectful way — a way that enables people to get past their differences. Persuade, Don’t Preach explains why people differ, why particular groups of people focus on certain issues, and why what the typical tactics simply don’t work. This knowledge will foster empathy and help you develop a plan for approaching people you disagree with in a way that restores civility and allows them to listen.

Christians often struggle to know where to start when it comes to telling others about God, Jesus, sin, and salvation. In this short book, J. Mack Stiles challenges us to view evangelism as something we do together instead of something we do alone, helping churches cultivate a culture of evangelism that goes beyond simply creating new programs or adopting the latest method. The seventh volume in the 9Marks: Building Healthy Churches series, this book will help Christians joyfully embrace evangelism as a way of life as it equips them to share their faith with those who don't yet know Jesus. Part of the 9Marks: Building Healthy Churches series.

How can we preach persuasively without huckstering, manipulating, or coercing people? Sadly, we are seeing the fall of many pastors not for reasons of sexual immorality, but the pursuit of pride and power. The skillful use of marketing methods creates celebrity pastors who become significant influencers in the evangelical church. The lure of success is seductive, turning pastors into hucksters and Christians into consumers. We need to heed the warnings of the New Testament about the pride of rhetoric and the pursuit of power. David Christensen carefully analyzes the biblical warnings of Paul about the temptations of rhetorical sophistry in the first-century church and applies them to pastoral ministry today. God calls preachers to be ethical and effective persuaders. David develops an ethical grid for pastoral persuasion using principles drawn from the Bible and social science along with practical illustrations from his years of ministry. He calls preachers to be ethical and effective persuaders by emphasizing the centrality of the word of God while depending on the power of the Spirit of God.

Three complete Plato dialogues - Euthyphro, Meno, Republic Book I - in a fresh English translation, with extensive commentary and original illustrations. "Reason and Persuasion" is suitable as an introductory textbook or for more advanced students of Plato and philosophy. The fourth edition is substantially revised, extended and improved. "There is no dearth of textbooks offering an introduction to Plato's thought, but Holbo's stands apart in the scope of its introductory material and its user-friendly style ... The colloquial yet accurate translation by Belle Waring serves to reduce the distance between the student and the world of the dialogues ... Holbo's commentaries on these three dialogues serve to situate them both as individual works and also as parts of Plato's overall project of showing the problems of persuasion divorced from reason. Rather than taking a strictly scholarly approach the author has made clear the relevance of these texts for questions even non-philosophers should find worth asking. For instructors seeking an introductory text for first time readers of Plato, Holbo's book is worthy of consideration." Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews (review of the 3rd edition)

Porter Taylor never doubted God but doubted whether the church was the only vehicle for the holy. Growing up Episcopalian, he lived with an awareness of the tag “Frozen Chosen” for the church. Therefore, he searched to find God elsewhere. Once he returned to the church, he found himself ordained as a priest and then a bishop. The higher up he went in the hierarchy, the harder it was to represent the church yet stay centered in his faith. Because of his position, he was part of the installment of the first gay person ordained an Episcopal bishop and the first woman and African American ordained as the head of the Episcopal Church. Porter never lost his faith in Jesus or his love for the church. However, he realized that he had done what he could as a bishop, and his calling required more freedom than the office could provide. He was then persuaded that the spirit was calling him to be faithful by stepping outside the episcopacy and returning to his first love of teaching.
