Salvation history can be thought of as twofold: one is that God Himself personally takes action and the other is God has humans act. An example of the latter is Exodus in which God had Moses lead the Israelites from Egypt to Canaan. The skin garment that God made with slain animals for the fallen Adam is an example of the former. Adam's fall is the very starting point of God's saving acts in human history. In His saving acts, God utilized his sin as the means of salvation. However, God's plan on saving human beings began far ahead of the creation of Adam, for omniscient God already knew of Adam's fall before the world had begun. As Apostle Peter confirms, God's will to save lost sinners was planned from the very beginning and Jesus Christ was chosen before the creation of the world as our Savior. In His saving plan, Almighty God reversed all the negatives that would arise from Adam's fall into positives, triumphing over them by the cross. We need to be clothed in the robe of righteousness, the garments of salvation through Jesus Christ. The fig leaf coverings sewn by human efforts cannot cover our nakedness. In essence, the grace of salvation originates from God, not from fallible humans. Current human history has been heading towards a thorough restoration of God's image. When the full and perfect restoration of God's image is accomplished, salvation history will finally be complete. Although heavily infected by sin, we have constantly been advancing towards the perfect restoration of God's image and likeness. When Jesus Christ returns to us, our defiled image of God will be transformed into His perfect likeness. On the day when He appears, as Apostle John says, we shall be like Him. That day will be the very end of human history. On that very day, at long last, God's redemptive plan will be completed.

Description: No one can appreciate the size or shape of a forest without flying over top to view the big picture. The Bible is like a forest and individual books are similar to trees. Studying small portions of Scripture is worthwhile and necessary. Nevertheless one of the first steps of discipleship after salvation should be an understanding of the big picture in the Bible. God's Unfolding Story of Salvation teaches believers that the biblical storyline is Christ-centered. Often people think of redemptive history only in terms of its promises in the Old Testament and its fulfillment in the New Testament. There is much more to the story than that. In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit also points to Christ through preparation for his birth, pictures or types, and anticipation. Since God's story ultimately affects each one of us, it is worth the time and effort required to understand it. If you do this, you will discover a pearl of great value. Forgiveness of sin and reconciliation with God are the greatest needs of everyone past, present, and future. This redemption story brings glory to God and benefits believers. Endorsements: ""Whether you are a young believer or a mature saint, immersing yourself in the study of the Scriptures is vital for your spiritual growth into the likeness of Christ our Savior. This unique Bible study, God's Unfolding Story of Salvation, carefully walks through the unfolding storyline of the Bible's redemptive history. It explores the interwoven themes and promises contained in the Old Testament and shows how they are gloriously fulfilled in the person and work of Jesus Christ. This study is a great tool for those who desire to 'search the Scriptures' and grow in the knowledge of the Savior's grace."" --John Dunn, Member, Providence Community Church, St. Catharines, Ontario ""Many Christians find the Bible an intimidating book because they do not know how the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments fit together --they cannot see the big picture. Heather Kendall's Bible study guide, God's Unfolding Story of Salvation, will solve that problem. Well organized, and with careful attention to the biblical text, Kendall's study will give Bible students a good grasp of God's redemptive history--of his eternal intention to redeem a people for his name from every tribe, tongue, and nation. Want the big picture? Get it here!"" --David Daniels, Senior Pastor, Grace Baptist Church, Richmond Hill, Ontario ""If you are looking for a personal or group study with lessons that cover the whole Bible, and have a concern for good theology, comprehensiveness, and practical usefulness, then this book will meet your expectations. Heather Kendall has carefully selected the highlight sections of Scripture and, chapter by chapter, utilizes the fabric of New and Old Testament passages to weave together the grandiose picture of the whole redemptive story. Heather demonstrates a great grasp of God's Word and astutely puts forth all the key elements of the biblical storyline with a Christocentric theme that pervades all of Scripture. You won't be disappointed."" --Gary George, Pastor, Sovereign Grace Chapel, Southbridge, Massachusetts About the Contributor(s): Heather A. Kendall is the author of A Tale of Two Kingdoms.

A New York Times Notable Book A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2012 A bold approach to understanding the American evangelical experience from an anthropological and psychological perspective by one of the country's most prominent anthropologists. Through a series of intimate, illuminating interviews with various members of the Vineyard, an evangelical church with hundreds of congregations across the country, Tanya Luhrmann leaps into the heart of evangelical faith. Combined with scientific research that studies the effect that intensely practiced prayer can have on the mind, When God Talks Back examines how normal, sensible people—from college students to accountants to housewives, all functioning perfectly well within our society—can attest to having the signs and wonders of the supernatural become as quotidian and as ordinary as laundry. Astute, sensitive, and extraordinarily measured in its approach to the interface between science and religion, Luhrmann's book is sure to generate as much conversation as it will praise.

Praise for the first edition: "[This] ambitious and courageous book [is a] benchmark of theology by which questions about the meaningful history of the Peoples Temple may be measured." —Journal of the American Academy of Religion Re-issued in recognition of the 25th anniversary of the mass suicides at Jonestown, this revised edition of David Chidester's pathbreaking book features a new prologue that considers the meaning of the tragedy for a post-Waco, post-9/11 world. For Chidester, Jonestown recalls the American religious commitment to redemptive sacrifice, which for Jim Jones meant saving his followers from the evils of capitalist society. "Jonestown is ancient history," writes Chidester, but it does provide us with an opportunity "to reflect upon the strangeness of familiar . . . promises of redemption through sacrifice."

What is the purpose of studying history? How do we reflect on contemporary life from a historical perspective, and can such reflection help us better understand ourselves, the world around us, and the God we worship and serve? Written by an accomplished historian, award-winning author, public evangelical spokesman, and respected teacher, this introductory textbook shows why Christians should study history, how faith is brought to bear on our understanding of the past, and how studying the past can help us more effectively love God and others. John Fea shows that deep historical thinking can relieve us of our narcissism; cultivate humility, hospitality, and love; and transform our lives more fully into the image of Jesus Christ. The first edition of this book has been used widely in Christian colleges across the country. The second edition provides an updated introduction to the study of history and the historian's vocation. The book has also been revised throughout and incorporates Fea's reflections on this topic from throughout the past 10 years.
