Pedro is a small donkey who escapes the oppression and hardship of being forced into labor. He leaves his home in search of love and respect, wanting to become the best donkey in the world. Pedro is an extraordinary animal. He is born into a group of donkeys who transport tourists in the small town of Lindos, on the Greek island of Rhodes. The work is difficult, so the donkeys are unhappy because their owner is very demanding. The little donkey learns quickly from the other donkeys, developing the skills he needs to escape and build a life for himself. On Pedro’s first day of work, attempting to carry a very fat and aggressive tourist, he struggles. He is too small and weak to carry the tourist’s weight. When the tourist abuses Pedro, he fights back. His mother begs him to run away and find a better life. He escapes, promising that he will return for her. Pedro meets a little girl while he is eating flowers outside a florist shop. She convinces her grandfather to let the donkey live with them. One day, Pedro stops a bank robbery. His fame as a hero brings him to the attention of his past owner, who wants his donkey back. Will Pedro be able to stay with his new friend, or will he have to return to his old life?

This Open Access book argues that Southern European countries offer valuable, though historically overlooked, knowledge regarding intimate citizenship. Guided by the fundamental sociological question of how change takes place and, concomitantly, how law and social policy adjust to and/or shape the practices and expectations of individuals in the sphere of intimacy, this edited volume explores partnering, parenting and friendship issues from the perspective of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer people in Italy, Portugal and Spain. Chapters offer a cross-national understanding of the relationship between everyday practices of intimacy amongst LGBTQ people and national legal, political and policy contexts in terms of the recognition of otherwise ‘intimate strangers’. The book contributes to further theoretical and policy debates about citizenship, care and choice, as well as, more broadly, sexuality, welfare, health and justice. This book will be of interest to scholars across Gender and Feminist Studies as well as Citizenship Studies, Law, Policy, and Politics.

A Genealogy of Puberty Science explores the modern invention of puberty as a scientific object. Drawing on Foucault’s genealogical analytic, Pinto and Macleod trace the birth of puberty science in the early 1800s and follow its expansion and shifting discursive frameworks over the course of two centuries. Offering a critical inquiry into the epistemological and political roots of our present pubertal complex, this book breaks the almost complete silence concerning puberty in critical theories and research about childhood and adolescence. Most strikingly, the book highlights the failure of ongoing medical debates on early puberty to address young people’s sexual and reproductive embodiment and citizenships. A Genealogy of Puberty Science will be of great interest to academics, researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of child and adolescent health research, critical psychology, developmental psychology, health psychology, feminist and gender studies, medical history, science and technology studies, and sexualities and reproduction studies.
