In recent years, the artwork of the self-taught has gained increasing recognition in the mainstream art world. The New Orleans Museum of Art, a leading institution in the field, organized this exhibition identifying and documenting the superb aesthetic achievement of selected artists from thirteen Southern states who, by definition, have not sought didactic art training, traditional diplomas, or association with other artists or with the established art world in general. This overview of painting and sculpture is the first large-scale effort to consider the work of self-taught Southern artists according to intrinsic artistic merit and without regard to race, religion, or gender.--Adapted from foreword, p. 6.

We've been conditioned to think that the CEO is the visionary who provides clear direction, but hero-leaders who make the headlines and become celebrities don't always have the skills to awaken the passion of those they lead. Attacking the myth that visions should come from the lone leader, Courageous Visions provides tools and resources that inspire employees at all levels to contribute and expand on the vision. The author, Martha Lasley, bases her book on the premise that personal visions are the spark for larger organizational visions.

In this interdisciplinary work, William L. Davis examines Joseph Smith's 1829 creation of the Book of Mormon, the foundational text of the Latter Day Saint movement. Positioning the text in the history of early American oratorical techniques, sermon culture, educational practices, and the passion for self-improvement, Davis elucidates both the fascinating cultural context for the creation of the Book of Mormon and the central role of oral culture in early nineteenth-century America. Drawing on performance studies, religious studies, literary culture, and the history of early American education, Davis analyzes Smith's process of oral composition. How did he produce a history spanning a period of 1,000 years, filled with hundreds of distinct characters and episodes, all cohesively tied together in an overarching narrative? Eyewitnesses claimed that Smith never looked at notes, manuscripts, or books—he simply spoke the words of this American religious epic into existence. Judging the truth of this process is not Davis's interest. Rather, he reveals a kaleidoscope of practices and styles that converged around Smith's creation, with an emphasis on the evangelical preaching styles popularized by the renowned George Whitefield and John Wesley.

With more than 10,000 copies sold, Passionate Vision endures as a pictorial collection that leads us on a journey from Gwaii Haanas in the west to Terra Nova in the east, Point Pelee in the south to Quttinirpaaq in the north. Dr. Roberta Bondar-one of Canada's most celebrated explorers-presents an exquisite photographic portrait of forty-one national parks, revealing the essence of Canada's rugged, intricate and fragile natural endowment. More than 100 full-colour photographs plus six stunning images from space are interwoven with lyrical quotations about the land by explorers, poets, ecologists and naturalists and short captions about the diversity of the country's natural areas. Ann Thomas, Curator of Photography at the National Gallery of Canada, situates these images in the long tradition of landscape photography with a brief essay. To this narrative, Dr. Bondar adds her own story: her vision of blending interests in science and photography and her unique perspective of Canada, a largely unexplored and delicate wilderness within a wider universe.

Download Passion of Christ Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Meet Jesus as a gay man of today in a contemporary city with The Passion of Christ: A Gay Vision. In stunning new images, the modern Christ figure is jeered by fundamentalists, tortured by Marine look-alikes, and rises again to enjoy homoerotic moments with God. His surprisingly diverse friends join him on a journey from suffering to freedom. Readers call it "accessible but profound." Some are moved to tears. The 24 paintings in the gay Passion cover Jesus' final days, including his arrest, trial, crucifixion, and resurrection. A queer Passion is important now because Christianity is being used to justify hate and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Each image is accompanied by insightful commentary, plus a short prayer and scripture. If Jesus came back today, would he be crucified all over again? Would we even recognize him? See for yourself in the gay vision of the Passion.
