According to Pope Francis, the conduct of the Church in regard to the Waldenses has been not only non-Christian, but also non-human; in other words inhumane. For this reason he feels it necessary and urgent to apologize from the bottom of his heart. In so doing, however, he is creating a huge rift (with his Church past) and a double antagonistic effect (with his Church past and present), because while trying to befriend the Waldenses, he antagonizes and infuriates his predecessors-starting with Innocent III (one of those responsible for the Waldenses' excommunication) to Pius IX excommunicating the entire modern world, not to mention his own founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola, whose principal aim in founding the Jesuit Order was to combat the Protestant Reformation.

Download Pope Francis Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Pope Francis was elected after the first papal resignation in nearly six centuries. Francis inherited a Church in crisis: sex abuse scandals, Vatican disorder, and a diminishing Catholic flock in a changing world. The first Latin American pope, Pope Francis has brought social justice commitments to Church reform and to international affairs. His efforts have drawn simultaneous acclaim and controversy as he has attempted to balance major changes with the fundamental teachings of the Catholic Church. Media Literacy Terms and Questions are also featured in this unique collection of coverage centering around one of the world's prominent religious leaders.

Download Toward a New Catholic Church Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
The National Book Award–winning author “seizes the moment of Catholicism’s sexual-abuse crisis” to call for a Vatican III (Publishers Weekly). Elaborating on “A Call for Vatican III” from his New York Times–bestseller Constantine’s Sword: The Church and the Jews, James Carroll proposes a clear agenda for reform, to help committed but concerned Catholics understand the most essential issues facing their Church. Carroll moves beyond current events to suggest new ways for Catholics to approach Scripture, Jesus, and power, and he looks at the daunting challenges facing the Church in a world of diverse beliefs and contentious religious fervor. His thought-provoking case for democracy within the Church illustrates why lay people have already initiated change. Carroll shows that all Catholics—parishioners, priests, bishops, men and women—have an equal stake in ensuring the Church’s future. “The boisterous collapse of trust in the Catholic hierarchy during the pedophile scandals makes it not only important but imperative to heed this eloquent call for a new Ecumenical (this time truly ecumenical) Council.” —Garry Wills, author of Why I Am a Catholic
