This edited volume contains papers presented at the Twentieth Pacific Trade and Development Conference. The editors contribute an introductory article; a dozen additional papers are organized into three sections: the international economic system, regional institutional arrangements, and systemic implications of Pacific dynamism. In the first section John Whalley has an insightful article on GATT, and Soogil Young discusses the place of an East Asian trading bloc in a global economic system. In the next section, H. Edward English and Murray G. Smith examine NAFTA and conclude that NAFTA may foster the formation of new regional trading arrangements in the Asia-Pacific region. Peter Drysdale and Ross Garnaut survey and analyze trade in the Pacific region and see additional gains from trade liberalization in the region. The final section of this work contains articles on direct investment, the Japanese yen, human capital flows, environmental issues, and post-Cold War security implications. An excellent work for those interested in the economic dynamics of the Pacific region.

Spectacular economic growth in the Pacific Basin--comprising the countries in or bordering on the Pacific Ocean--is transforming world politics and economics. This growth in production, international trade, and overall economic achievement has brought about a shift in the world's political and economic center of gravity, a shift away from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

Download Economic Dynamism in the Asia-Pacific Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This broad-ranging student textbook examines the rise of the Asia-Pacific as an important economic region. It looks at the sources of that rise, its future development and the possible consequences for the global economy. The analysis is divided into three sections considering: * how far the Asia-Pacific has developed as a regional system, looking at the patterns of integration of the principal economies * the relationship between the key individual economies of Japan, Korea, China and the United States * how the rise of the Asia-Pacific economy has affected the international economic system. In so doing it provides much-needed insights not only into the growth of this powerful economic region, but also the international context of Asia-Pacific development.

Download Industrial Policy in an Era of Globalization Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Globalization reigns supreme as a description of recent economic transformation--and it carries many meanings. In the policy realm, the orthodox terms of engagement have been enshrined in the "Washington consensus." But disappointing results in Latin America and transitional economies--plus the Asian financial crisis--have shaken the faith in Washington and elsewhere. One response has been to hark back to the more statist policies that the consensus marginalized. In this regard, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan are promoted as the poster nations that have derived great benefits from increasing integration with the international economy, without surrendering national autonomy in the economic or cultural spheres, effectively beating the West at its own game. The fundamental questions addressed in this monograph are whether industrial policy was indeed a major source of growth in these three economies, and if so, can it be replicated under current institutional arrangements, and if so, is it worth replicating, or, would developing countries today be better off embracing the suitably refined orthodoxy?

East Asian Dynamism continues to offer a succinct account of Pacific regional political economy from the dawn of the modern world system to projections of alternative futures. Steve Chan is a master at demystifying the geography, history, and culture of the region while bringing to life the current policy choices and dilemmas facing its people and leaders. In this new edition, he broadens the geographical scope of the book to encompass more of Southeast Asia and Australia, with specific coverage of Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Burma, Indonesia, and Singapore highlighted along the way. And now that peace has “broken out all over,” the focus shifts strongly to issues of growth, trade, and cultural interface as Pacific regional security becomes more and more a function of economic strength, regional cooperation, and global outreach.

Download Rivalry And Cooperation In The Asia-pacific: The Dynamics Of A Region In Transition (In 2 Volumes) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Rivalry and Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the most important strategic and economic region in the world. Asia-Pacific is a region that is undergoing a major transformation, largely as a consequence of the rise of China and its growing rivalry with the United States. Whatever happens in the Asia-Pacific will profoundly influence global events, not just regional ones. Looking ahead, the region's future direction — and even its name — is contested and uncertain. This two-volume reference work, by one of the world's leading analysts of regional affairs, places these events in historical context and considers what they may mean for future political, economic and strategic relations. By focusing on the United States, China and the region's most significant middle powers, the book explains why and how the Asia-Pacific has become the fulcrum of international events.
