Minot Judson Savage (June 10, 1841 - May 22, 1918) was an American Unitarian minister, psychical researcher and author. He graduated from the Bangor Theological Seminary in 1864, and for nine years was in the Congregational ministry, being a home missionary at San Mateo and Grass Valley, California, until 1867. Savage became a Unitarian, and was pastor of the Third Unitarian Church of Chicago from 1873 to 1874, of the Church of the Unity in Boston from 1874 to 1896, and of the Church of the Messiah in New York City from 1896 to 1906. He was an active advocate of Darwinian evolutionistic optimism and social reform.

The sermons which make up this volume were spoken in the Church of the Messiah during the season of 1897-98. They are printed as delivered - not as literature, but for the sake of preaching to a larger congregation than can be reached on Sunday morning. "Contains sermons given in the Church of the Messiah during the first year of Dr. Savage's pastorate in New York. They are characterized by the qualities which have made him an attractive and influential preacher. The constructive purpose which underlies the incisive criticisms of orthodox formularies appears in the claim that 'we liberals of the modern world are the ones who come nearer to preaching the gospel of Christ than any other part of the so-called Christian Church." -New Outlook "Another of the volumes in which the accomplished and courageous preacher discusses the various leading questions of religion in the light of modern science and criticism. Probation, atonement, prayer, worship, evolution, are some of the subjects taken up; and in the chapter entitled 'Why Are Not All Educated People Unitarians?' he presses very energetically the inquiry why all men do not look at these subjects in the modern way. There is no man in the American pulpit who is exercising greater influence than Mr. Savage in the directions here indicated, and this new work is one of the best and most compendious volumes he has given us." -New England Magazine "He is an evolutionist, and shows the influence of such men as Darwin and Spencer in his sermons. His chief characteristic is a rare combination of poetic gifts with a mind that is keenly logical....Rev. M. J. Savage has devoted the last quarter century of his life to the work of harmonizing science and religion." -Boston Home Journal CONTENTS. UNITARIANISM "WHAT DO YOU IN PLACE OF WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY?" ARE THERE ANY CREEDS WHICH IT IS WICKED FOR US TO QUESTION? WHY HAVE UNITARIANS NO CREED? THE REAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PRESENT RELIGIOUS DISCUSSION DOUBT AND FAITH - BOTH IS LIFE A PROBATION ENDED BY DEATH? SIN AND ATONEMENT PRAYER, AND COMMUNION WITH GOD THE WORSHIP OF GOD MORALITY NATURAL, NOT STATUTORY REWARD AND PUNISHMENT THINGS WHICH DOUBT CANNOT DESTROY EVOLUTION LOSES NOTHING OF VALUE TO MAN WHY ARE NOT ALL EDUCATED PEOPLE UNITARIANS? WHERE IS THE EVANGELICAL CHURCH?

Annie Besant brings readers on a journey through the planes of existence, explaining the interplay of the physical reality we perceive and the spiritual planes beyond our perception. By quoting ancient documents of Buddhism and Taoism, Besant describes the composition and processes of the mysterious worlds beyond what we see and hear in everyday life. The divine wisdom of Theosophy includes doctrines from multiple ancient religions, such as those of Egypt, India, Tibet and Eastern Asia. In the eyes of the theosophist, each of these contributes truths to the phenomena of the physical, astral and mental planes which are explored by Besant. Philosophical concepts of the Self, the soul, the afterlife, and reincarnation receive attention in the later stages of this book, which also explains the links between the planes and concepts such as the Buddha realms and Nirvana. Besant keenly summarizes and describes the major facets of theosophy, whilst praising the movement's founder H. P. Blavatsky. Throughout this text, Besant's gifts for explanation and descriptive writing demystify spiritual mysteries and ideas that would otherwise be hard to comprehend. For years a leading proponent of the theosophic movement, Annie Besant published several books and delivered lectures in the early 20th century.

Just before the turn of the century, a renegade Russian aristocrat named Madame Blavatsky came to America claiming that man was descended not from the ape but from spiritual beings. Thus began Theosophy, the very first "new age" religion. This thought-provoking and often hilarious study delineates the course of Theosophy and other sects which have come down through the years.
