The past decade has seen a major resurgence in optics research and the teaching of optics throughout the major universities both in this country and abroad. Electrooptical devices have become a challenging form of study that has penetrated both the electrical engineering and the physics departments of most major schools. There seems to be something challeng ing about a laser that appeals to both the practical electrical engineer with a hankering for fundamental research and to the fundamental physicist with a hankering to be practical. Somehow or other this same form of enthusiasm has not previously existed in the study of photoelectronic devices that form images. This field of, endeavor is becoming more and more so phisticated as newer forms of solid state devices enter the field not only in the data processing end but in the conversion of radiant energy into electrical charge patterns that are stored, manipulated, and read out in a way that a decade ago would have been considered beyond some fundamental limit or other. It is unfortunate, however, that this kind of material has heretofore been learned only by the process of becoming an apprentice in one or more of the major development laboratories concerned with the manufacture of image intensifiers or television tubes or the production of systems employing these devices.

Biomedical optical imaging is a rapidly emerging research area with widespread fundamental research and clinical applications. This book gives an overview of biomedical optical imaging with contributions from leading international research groups who have pioneered many of these techniques and applications. A unique research field spanning the microscopic to the macroscopic, biomedical optical imaging allows both structural and functional imaging. Techniques such as confocal and multiphoton microscopy provide cellular level resolution imaging in biological systems. The integration of this technology with exogenous chromophores can selectively enhance contrast for molecular targets as well as supply functional information on processes such as nerve transduction. Novel techniques integrate microscopy with state-of-the-art optics technology, and these include spectral imaging, two photon fluorescence correlation, nonlinear nanoscopy; optical coherence tomography techniques allow functional, dynamic, nanoscale, and cross-sectional visualization. Moving to the macroscopic scale, spectroscopic assessment and imaging methods such as fluorescence and light scattering can provide diagnostics of tissue pathology including neoplastic changes. Techniques using light diffusion and photon migration are a means to explore processes which occur deep inside biological tissues and organs. The integration of these techniques with exogenous probes enables molecular specific sensitivity.

A detailed definition of the facilities required for comprehensive investigation of a wide variety of electro-optical (E-O) imaging devices is presented. The types of E-O devices whose characteristics were quantified are: (1) camera tubes, (2) infrared image devices, (3) image intensifiers, and (4) solid state imaging devices. These devices were first analyzed to determine their internal and external design characteristics. Operating parameters were then evaluated so that the measurement techniques capable of quantifying their performance could be defined. The test configurations needed to test each parameter for each type of device were defined. Particular emphasis was placed on selecting test setups which permitted maximum commonality between device types to arrive at a modular and integrated facility. After the functional requirements for each piece of test equipment were established, a survey of sources of test equipment was conducted and off-the-shelf items were specified to the greatest extent practicable.
